@Bonatogether:

Can we have one clue?
the person in question won a Pulitzer Prize for a written work of non-journalistic non-fiction

That ought to help a lot.

It could therefore be the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction or possibly the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography.

Or, I suppose, the Pulitzer Prize for History.

I have quickly reviewed the recipients of the Pulitzer Prize for History, first awarded in 1917, up as far as the 1960s.

Very few of the recipients are from, or listed as having lived, in the Southern states, while also having been alive in 1900. So I don't think it's that one.

I have checked the Pulitzer winners up to 1980, I found 3 that were on the cover of Time in the decade they won or the one after:

Norman Mailer, convicted of assault
Robert Coles, Air Force captain
Carl Sagan, scientist

Guess we'll need to look further.

The Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction wasn't introduced until the 1960s and reading the recipients up to the 1980s, very few of them were born early enough.

You checked multiple categories, that quickly?

Ah. I am not familiar with the Pulitzer's, I checked general non-fiction.

I am working through the Biography category. Thought it might be Emory Holloway, but he briefly served with the US army during WW1.

I don't think we know he was alive in 1900. He was alive in the 20th century.

Well after 7 questions our question master posted this:

1. not fictional
2. not a woman
3. not alive
4. alive during 1900s
5. no movie made or starred in
6. native speaker of english
7. US citizen
I mis-remembered this as "1900" not "1900s" so actually anyone born up to the end of that decade would be a candidate. Damn, I need to re-check. I was mistakenly using the year 1900 as a cut-off.

Guess:

Is it Douglas Southall Freeman?

He appears to fit all of the criteria. He was born in 1886 in Virginia (which I believe is classed as being in the south), he was a native English speaking US citizen who was not known for any of the listed professions, and he won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography, for writing about Robert E. Lee. He appeared on the cover of Time Magazine for the October 1948 edition.

So yet again 'real dead male' would have saved 2 questions.

Alive during 20th century?
yes
It's not even the decade....

WOOO HOOOO

I would not have gotten it without the Pulitzer Prize clue, so thank you for that.

This was a challenge for sure. I feel like I have done about a month's worth of research.

i think the large amount of questions that were sunk into job stuff made it exceedingly difficult to solve, although i think eventually someone would have gotten through the TIME magazine covers from the 1940s

It was a tough one.

I think we fixated on "job" because each time you said "no" it did nonetheless feel like we were narrowing it down.

New game is up:

Is Douglas Southall Freeman really that well known in the South?

Sheesh, and people *cough*Jamiet99uk*cough* thought my pick was out there . . .

Hey, I've never heard of the guy until now. I only found him via a process of elimination.

he's not exactly common dinnertime conversation, but many people would recognize the name, and any civil war buff would know his work. someone like @eden might better be able to attest to this.

suspect that his impact outside the US would be minimal - no surprise to me that jaime hadn't heard of him
