Or possibly he was some kind of celebrity taxidermist.

it would be easier if you knew his job
We spent a lot of questions on that. Maybe we should have started with more generic questions, but it's certainly not a job we've encountered before.
Maybe he was an insurance salesman specialising in policies for lobster fishermen.

Are there any famous southerners who did that for a living and managed to get on the cover of TIME magazine?
Didn't everyone feature on the cover of Time magazine back in 2006? And most of them were alive in the 1900s

The famous "You" cover.

I was not thinking of the 'you' cover. The intended meaning of the answer (and the question, I believe, as I don't think anyone would ask a question that would result in one possible answer) is that an image of the person was on the cover of TIME magazine

What does the group here think about Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart?

He did a lot of little things (lots of stores) but is known for his one big chain. He's associated with the south (Wal-Mart started in Arkansas). He was on the cover of Time on June 15, 1990.

Also, I can't find any evidence that a movie was made about him - a couple of TV things, but no movie...

Fails.

Our suspect did not serve in the military.

Walton was a Captain in WW2

Dunno how I missed that on the wikipedia page, thanks for the double check.

I looked through the rest of the '90s and didn't really find anyone else whom I thought fit... I wouldn't mind having someone else doing a double-check.

On to the 80's.

If I'm reading the rules correctly, there are no more free guesses.

No, we've got at least one left.

Oh sorry, JECE, you are right.

We're at the point of having three FORMAL guesses and then we lose.

Tennessee Williams was an official guess.

So we have two guesses, full stop, and if neither of those is right, Bona has defeated us.

The rule is:

After all 20 questions are up, three total guesses are allowed.

We've used one final guess. JECE had it right.

It's ok because you might as well have a go. We're not close to success on this one at all.

Yeah, I did a quick sweep of the 80's last night and didn't really feel like I found anyone that really fit the mold. (Again, someone else can feel free to do the same).

Dan Rather was kind of interesting, but not sure if a news anchor falls under "entertainer" and not sure if he's associated with the south enough (he was from Texas and famously covered the JFK assassination).

T Boone Pickens was also kind of interesting, but again, not sure how "associated with the south" he is (he was from Oklahoma and did business there, but he was a corporate raider and that seems like "finance" which was ruled out. (He also was on a college basketball, which I'm not sure if also disqualifies him due to sportsman.)

Maybe I'll look at the 70's later.

Can we have one clue?
