Did he have a doctorate-level qualification? (That is, was he entitled to be known as "Dr." rather than "Mr.") ?

I assume from this that he was awarded an honorary doctorate, or at one time or another self-styled himself as "doctor" without any qualification to that effect.
That's interesting in its own right.
