This too, I felt bad being a bully last game. My apologies about that.
No worries, you were scum. Which makes sense in hindsight, because I was shocked that someone who argued about logical statements could so severely misinterpret everything I said. I should have pushed back harder!

In person mafia is even more random than this.

Legit people lynch each other for laughing or because of out of game reasons routinely
That's also a sign that people are bad at recognizing physical tells. But I personally think recognizing tells on forum is near impossible. If it weren't for PRs, I don't think town would have any hope at all. Say 11 VT and 2 vanilla scum, I think scum wins nearly every time.

Because I was asked:

My face-to-face mafia games have been 100% serious and competitive, and are among the most intense games I have ever played—period. No special powers or whatever. Just the original (Russian?) rules. My group has reached a point where it is common for the mafia to be voted out correctly at each opportunity.

I am not that interested in playing a mafia game with any powers beyond the basic rules. I want to focus on the simple skill of trying to read someone (or bluff). I personally think that additional rules distract from the core gameplay and encourage goofball behavior.

I am not worried about reading someone without seeing their face. I can tell when I’m being lied to through writing; I get emails, text messages, etc. at work or in my personal life that I don’t believe. I also have played online Diplomacy for many years and do not struggle to see through the lies. Wording, timing, hesitation, confusion, mistaken ideas, inconsistencies, emotional tone, etc. are all there in writing.

Ah, alright. We do occasionally run "vanilla" games, with few or no PRs, but I'm wondering where you've played with not even a doctor? Even the most bare bones Mafia games I've played have always had some roles.

We could run a truly vanilla game if people are interested. I just don't think it would go that well.

Last game was practically vanilla with two PRs killed D1/N1 and the third PR got no useful results.

I've played face-to-face games at parties that were pure vanilla.

It's a good way to introduce people to the basic concepts and it can be quite fun, plus it's pretty quick.

Skills like this are what I'm trying to develop by playing (besides having fun), and it's the fact I don't have them that makes me think vanilla forum mafia is too hard for town. I also think I'm a better liar than I am at detecting lies, but I don't think that speaks well of me.

If goofball behavior is a problem, then, uh... you may be in the, uh, very wrong place...

Bump. 3 spots left for ideal setup.

Whatever number we have, I'll run a game with.

On the subject of PRs, current webdip mafia relies too much on town PRs. Go back to the beginning of webdip mafia and you'll see less complex setups. Playing with lots of PRs is definitely a different experience, because when there are too many PRs, people stop trying to figure out who is lying and try to figure out the puzzle pieces of fake claims and tracker scans. Webdip is really not that great at simply reading people because we don't play setups that require people to solely rely on that skill anymore (okay we do, but not very often).

Setups with lots of PRs can be a lot of fun, don't get me wrong. But I think we need more pure mafia play for it to be even more fun. I purposely only join more simple games on here because A) I have less time, B) They are more fun for me personally

I could join this game provided it's the 1 cop 1 doctor setup. Also I'll be terribly busy for the first 24 hours.

This paragraph is very interesting to me.

In my (now fairly considerable) experience, confusion and mistakes are often more likely to be town-tells than scum-tells (which is why people sometimes try to fake them).

I frequently pursue people for inconsistencies and it's about 50/50 whether they're inconsistencies from a scum mindset or a confused town mindset. However I still find it useful, because when you put someone under pressure, their reaction to that pressure can be revealing. It's probably one of my main tools, in fact.

Wording, timing and emotional tone can certainly be alignment indicative, but again, both ways.

It will be a vanilla setup with 12 Doctors and no cop.

I need to learn that baseless over-confidence is a towntell for you, Damo.

If you can mimic that attitude effectively as scum, you'll be onto a winner.

Game starts 8 hours and 10 minutes from this post. I'll post the thread at lumchtime and send role PMs in the preceeding hour.
