INTRODUCTION

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game (for the town majority) is to kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game.

RULES
=====


0.) The GMs reserve the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his or her discretion.
1.) All players must vote at least once per game day, and post a game-related post at least twice per game day.
2.) All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.
3.) All players are forbidden from using encryption unless explicitly allowed by the setup.
4.) All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing.
5.) All spectators and players who have been eliminated are forbidden from posting on all QT threads related to the game.
6.) All players are forbidden from cheating.
7.) All players are required to play to win and are not allowed to attempt to sabotage their team.
8.) Players and/or teams may not concede the game in public.
9.) No players or spectators may +1 a player's post. It is permissible to +1 a GM post.
10.) All players must follow the typical webDiplomacy rules and forum rules.
11.) Any issues, concerns, or complaints should be directed toward the GMs only. For concerns that require escalation beyond the GMs, contact the moderators.
12.) Violations of these rules may carry a penalty at the discretion of the GMs.

ELABORATION

0. Given a lack of omniscience, the GM cannot create a rule to resolve all possible scenarios pre-emptively. To compensate for this, the GM is permitted to resolve a given scenario however they see fit, within the remit of the rules listed above, in the interest of all participants. The GM will resolve all scenarios as closely as possible to the intention of the rules, and will present an explanation regarding the adjudication to the greatest possible detail (which does not compromise anything in-game) and as closely in accordance with the written rules as possible.

1. You MUST cast a vote at least once during each day phase. You may vote and then 'unvote' (see below) if you change your mind as the Day progresses, however you may not end the phase with an 'unvote' in place. Anyone violating this rule will be modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances. Ending the day with a vote on “No Lynch” is permitted. During each day phase, every player MUST make at least two game-related posts. The GMs will use reasonable discretion when applying this rule.

2. All role PMs have been posted in the setup information. The point of this rule is to forbid "gaming" the role PMs to determine alignments; after all, the fun of this game is reading people, not outguessing the GM.

3. Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels that an average person would require outside software or other tools to decode. It is perfectly acceptable to leave "hidden messages" in your posts (for example, spelling out "I AM THE COP" with the first letters of every sentence), but as a rule of thumb, if you don't think the average user could decode it without a decryption service, don't post it.

4. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. Only GM endorsed QuickTopic threads can be used for communicating with one another outside of the main game thread; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging between players. You may PM the GM with questions or instructions.

5. Players who have been removed from the game are no longer playing the game, and will not be permitted to comment on it in private messages or comment threads. A special QuickTopic "God Thread" will be opened for individuals who wish to spectate on the game, or players who have been eliminated. Use this channel to discuss the game while it is still ongoing.

6. This is a catch-all rule intended to preserve the spirit of the game. If you are considering saying or doing something that may be against the spirit of the game, message the GM about it before saying/doing it and the GM will let you know whether it is allowed or not.

To clarify further: Players may not copy and paste any game related Mechanics. Players may not doctor, and create fake game related mechanics. Players may not share personal correspondence between GM to player under any circumstances. The GM will not confirm any claims, or adjudicate based upon anything that could easily be sorted out through questioning and evidentiary circumstance.

7. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; the GM will exercise caution and restraint in observing this rule. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message me first so I can determine the best course of action.

8. If someone wishes to concede defeat, they must PM the GM, or post in their relevant QT thread for the GM to check it over. Public concessions are not permitted.

9. You are not permitted to click the "+1" on any other player's in-game posts. Giving +1s to the GM, by contrast, is actively encouraged.

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM’s discretion, up to and including immediate removal from the game and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. Sanctions such as future bans will be determined by the consensus of the active player base after the game has concluded. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

ROLE ACTIONS
If you have any actions to take, please PM your action the GM. Night actions will be processed at the end of the night and can be changed up to that point.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM
Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not mod-killed by rule in this game. The in-game voting mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the “VOTING” section below for more information. Suffice to say that spamming is not worth anyone’s time in this setup, and will be frowned upon, so while you may not be lynched or mod-killed for spamming, please refrain from doing so.

PLAYER SILENCES:
Players that have other participants on their mute list are asked to remove them for the duration of this game. Disputes stemming from outside of this game should not carry over into the gameplay. If they do, the GM reserves the right to address these issues and potentially remove or sanction players if it becomes a disruption.

FORUM SILENCES:
If a player is silenced on the forum by the site moderators/admins, an alternate will take their place for the duration of their silence. The silenced player will then have the option to take their position back over or leave it in the hands of the alternate. As long as the silence does not stem from actions involving the mafia thread, there will be no in-game sanctions for a forum silence.

REPLACEMENTS
A player wishing to drop out may be replaced at the GM's discretion. Individuals wishing to serve as potential replacements must NOT join the out-of-game God QT. Replacement is not guaranteed.

TURN DURATION
This game’s Day phases will last 48 hours and Night phases will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g., hammer). Extensions may be granted at the GM’s discretion, but don’t count on it. Phase shifts will be at 10pm UK time, 4pm Central Time. Game starts at the beginning of Day 1.

VOTING
======

There are three types of voting within this game: collective voting to execute perceived Mafia in Day phases, collective voting to end a Day or Night phase, and Mafia voting to kill town members in Night phases.

“Lynch” vote: The first level of voting is for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of hash symbols before your intended vote target. (e.g., ##VOTE ND) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as the GM can understand who you're referencing. In the event of a tie during an execution vote, no one shall be killed.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not use double hashtags your vote will not be counted, for reasons of fairness but also because it is unlikely the GM will see your vote using the CTRL+F feature and this rule thus prevents vote miscounts.

Must Vote: At the end of the Day phase, all participating players must have their vote on a candidate. You may ##VOTE and then ##UNVOTE if you change your mind as the Day progresses, however you may not end the phase with an ##UNVOTE in place. Anyone violating this rule will be modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances. Ending the day with a vote on “No Lynch” is permitted.

Hammer Vote: The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to activate the hammer mechanic. Notate this vote with a pair of hashes before the word end. (EX: ##END). The day will end as soon as a majority of players are voting to endhammer the same player. If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day. Night phases may not normally be hammered - any exception to this will be announced by the GM.

Mafia Vote: The third level of voting refers to Mafia members choosing their factional NK (nightkill) targets during Night phases. The mafia members will use their separate QuickTopic thread to discuss this. Please make your votes in bold, like so: kill Zultar (< b > kill Zultar < / b >). Mafia NK will be decided by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the oldest vote will break the tie. The Godfather is the member of the Mafia team that carries out the kill. If the Godfather is dead the Item Thief/Goon or Secretary will carry out the kill based on the oldest vote.

TOWN ROLES:

Alien Cop: The Alien cop scans one player each night to determine if they have Alien DNA. Results read as ALIEN DNA or NO ALIEN DNA and they do not differentiate between the actual alien or infected town player. The Alien Cop wins with the town.

Lazy Cop: The Lazy cop scans one player each night to determine if they are a member of the Majestic 12. Results will be received on the subsequent night phase and read MJ-12 Clearance Confirmed or No Security Clearance (Not MJ-12). The Lazy Cop wins with the town.

Army Truck Driver: Each night the Army Truck Driver can pick one player up and switch them with another player. Thus, any night action performed on a switched player will affect the other player targeted by the bus driver. Players switched will receive a PM notifying them they went on a whirlwind ride. The Army Truck Driver wins with the town.

Medicine Man (3x): The Medicine Man has three songs that allow him to restore vitality, balance, and harmony to the holy people.
Song of Restoration (1x): When a body dies (with the exception of disintegration) the spirit goes into limbo for 24 hours (not the god qt). The Medicine Man can act during the day or night phase to sing a song of restoration which will return the spirit to the body at the end of the subsequent phase.
Song of Cleansing (1x): Once per game, the Medicine Man and enact a holy ritual which will remove the Alien Virus, Government Bio Virus, or any other harmful role impairing ability (roleblock).
Song of Healing (1x): Once per game, the Medicine Man may visit a player and protect them with holy herbs and chants. This will protect them from any killing action.
The Medicine Man wins with the town.

Vanilla Townie (10): You are a vanilla townie! Each day you may vote for whoever you believe to be scum. You win with the town.

MAFIA ROLES:

Mafia (4 Scum PR)

The Mafia have a faction roleblock, but one member that holds the Mafia QT have to carry it out. A Mafia PR cannot take two night actions.

Assassin (1x shot): The Assassin does not possess the mafia qt and does not gain it. Additionally, the assassin has a high capacity rifle and can shoot a target during the day or night. Once the shot is fired they revert to being a traitor with no action. If the traitor/assassin is the last surviving mafia member they can access to the night kill. The Assassin wins with the mafia. They appear as MJ-12 on cop scans.



Godfather: The Godfather is immune to the alien virus and scans as a town player to the lazy cop. They also know the identity of the Assassin, but the Assassin does not know the Godfather’s identity. The Godfather carries out the night kill. The Godfather wins with the mafia.


Item Thief (3x): The Item Thief can visit one player per night and will steal any item they have. They can hold up to one item. After three successful item thefts the Item Thief becomes a Mafia Goon. Players are notified if their item is stolen. The Item Thief appears as MJ-12 on cop scans. The Secretary wins with the Mafia.

Secretary (1x): The Secretary allows the mafia to talk during the day. Additionally, once per game the Secretary may target a player to discover what action they took or did not take during the night phase. The Secretary appears as MJ-12 on cop scans. The Secretary wins with the mafia.

THIRD PARTY ROLE

Alien: The Alien is night immune unless targeted by an item that circumvents night immunity. The Alien infects one player each night with the Alien Virus. The player will not learn they were infected. The Alien reads as ALIEN DNA on Alien Cop reports. Players infected by the Alien Virus register the following effects:

-Night of Infection-: The infected player registers as an Alien on Alien Cop reports.
-Following Day Phase-: If the infected player votes for the Alien then their vote will automatically be transferred to whoever the Alien voted for.
-2nd Day Phase-: The infected player’s vote will automatically be transferred to whoever the Alien voted for.
-3rd Day Phase-: The Alien becomes aware of the infected player’s night actions (if any) and can redirect them to whoever the alien wants to target. If there are multiple players that are 3rd day phase infection or beyond the Alien is limited to doing this on one player.

The Alien wins when there is a majority of players infected. Infected players do not switch alignments.

ITEM INFORMATION

3x Satellite Phone: A military satellite phone used to communicate at night in -QT- with others who possess a satellite phone.

1x Triage Kit: A military triage kit used to heal grievous wounds

1x Reverse Alien DNA: A Secret Government antibody that reverses the Alien Virus and heals a player of the Alien Virus.

1x Alien Manipulation Ray: A vote is applied elsewhere at the player’s discretion. Can be used during the day phase.

1x Alien Heat Gun: When used on another player during the day phase that player gets extremely hot. It will be publicly revealed that the targeted player cannot vote and any and all votes will be subtracted from vote counts/final vote count. If used at night it works as a roleblock. The Alien is immune during the day phase and if cast on the Alien the action is considered to have failed.

1x Government Security Check: A player may check to see if another player is MJ-12 or not. Results come in a day late.

1x Alien Synthesizer: When used a player is able to target another player at night. The targeted player receives an extra item of the targeting player’s choosing from this group.
A gun which can be used during the day.
A dart which is used by pm’ing the gm’s and will not reveal the player who used it. The dart roleblocks the targeted player’s night action (if any)
A military vest which on at night makes the player immune to one night killing action.

1x Holy Herb: Allows the player to ingest a holy herb. Once they take it they select one player. If they are killed then that player’s identity is publicly revealed. In effect for the phase taken and the subsequent phase.

1x Alien Ray Gun: A player is disintegrated. No body, name, or role reveal. If used during the day phase the player disintegrated will still be listed until the post end of day vote count. This circumvents night immunity.

1x Intelligence Box: When used the player will receive whatever PM or Night Action the targeted player took for that night phase unless it is the Alien or a 3rd day infected player who was redirected by the Alien.

FLAVOR POST

In the quiet pre-dawn Nevada skies in the summer of 1950 a spiral of purple and green flames ripple across the desert. No one is about. The nearest known town is 10 miles away, but in the shadow of this remote part of Nevada rests ‘Dreamland’ or otherwise known on government maps as Area-51. Something is amiss though. The explosion is not of this world and surely someone will come to inquire about it.

MAFIA 44: DREAMLAND has now begun. Who will win? The town? The Mafia? Or the Third Party Alien?
