MAFIA - Beginner / Newbie Game - interest and sign up thread
Interested in playing Mafia?
New to the game and want to gain experience playing alongside other newbies without the old hacks intimidating you?
I am proposing to run a newbie game for 10 to 15 players.
To sign up, you must have played in no more than THREE games of webDip Mafia.
The game will start on 26th November if I've had enough interest by then.

Funny.
You are far from a newb. Do you want to be a coach, though? See my PM for details.

Coaches should play in the game - otherwise the meta is really weird. Mafiascum puts a few experienced players into newbie games for direction

The number of games I've played has a 3 in it.Jamiet99uk wrote: ↑Sun Nov 18, 2018 6:36 pmInterested in playing Mafia?

Nah, coaches shouldn't play. Instead get some vet's like me and sign us up to coach the newb's via PM. Durga should be doing the invite game anyway, right?
Re: MAFIA - Beginner / Newbie Game - interest and sign up thread
I think coaching via PM is a huge mistake tbh

How do you coach someone in-game? If you are playing?
Re: MAFIA - Beginner / Newbie Game - interest and sign up thread
I've heard them called hydras. Hydras coach via PM, and are anonymous (only the hydra and their newb know who got matched up) so that meta stays out of it. Hydras don't tell the newbs who to vote for, who is scum, etc. They more or less answer questions and provide more generic critique. Examples of critique include "you should keep an open mind and stop tunneling" or "scum tend to contradict themselves, so look for contradictions in what people say" or "you shouldn't protect your scummates so much, you will look bad when you flip". This more general criticism helps players develop rather than helping them win games.
If the newb asks a specific question, such as "does player X look scummy to you?", instead of answering it yes or no, ask "what do you think" and then when they reply, you can tell them if you disagree with them and why. For example, if the newb says, "I think player X is townie because he has been vocal, put up a detailed reads list, and defended player Y who we now know is town", you could respond with something along the lines of "being vocal is generally more townie, but can be faked by scum. Readslists can be townie if they are consistent and original, but sometimes scumhides behind readslists that are unoriginal or ingenuine. Which of these do you think player X is employing? The fact that he defended player Y could be worrying since only scum knew for a fact that player Y was town. Does the reasoning player X provided sound genuine to you?" Basically you should be able to give the advice you are giving even if you are barely following the game.
I was a hydra coach for wjessop back in I think M9 (whatever his first game was) and I think it worked really well in that way.
I think coaches in the game offers things that this hydra style doesn't, so it depends what you are going for. I learned my mafia skills because of ghug criticizing me in game, so there is definitely merit there. Since this is specifically a newb game though, I think hydras would be better.

Just to answer more basic questions ND.
I don't think it's particularly helpful to coach someone privately. Plus how will we get 13 coaches? I'm certainly not interested in reading a mafia game that I'm not a part of.

Yeah, a hydra system could work. I guess. Fine, fair points.
