What was the other obscure novel you mentioned where he was referenced? I though it might be _1985_, but wasn't sure.

It was 1985, by György Dalos. Apparently there is more than one 1985 novel based on 1984. I used this article to find it:

Of the books in the list I posted, I could only find two that seemed to have any sort of "sequel", 1984 and Brave New World. Huxley wrote a non-fiction essay on BNW, then wrote a "utopia" version called Island, but it seemed to be a different world. I found Dalos's 1985 but couldn't find where it might reference Emmanuel, so I really wasn't sure - but he seemed like the right kind of character.

One edition happened to have Google Books Snippet View available, so I was able to search the book for references to 'Goldstein'.
