Re: 20 Questions Version 472
I have a strong guess but I don't want to use the last question before everyone makes their free guesses.
Re: 20 Questions Version 472
I think the entire Russia is on the table, as long as the person isn't Russian. They can be born in Russia and rule another country - although unlikely. And actually, we talked about the modern day borders so they can be born in Kamchatka and be fine.miminena wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 8:58 pmAren't certain parts of modern day Russia still on the table? As in the parts that weren't Russian at the time.DreamTrawler wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 7:45 pmSo unless I’m missing something this person was either born in what is now Ukraine or the European part of Turkey, right?
(not a question, just asking the other players)
Re: 20 Questions Version 472
I don't think as far east as Kamchatka would be fine, given the Europe question, but yeah that makes sense.yavuzovic wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 9:03 pmI think the entire Russia is on the table, as long as the person isn't Russian. Re: 20 Questions Version 472
I will toss out George VIII of Georgia, for no reason other than they have a more interesting Wikipedia page than most of the other candidates I’ve come across.
Don’t forget Konigsberg/Kaliningrad is now part of Russia, though I didn’t find anyone interesting from there inside the relevant time period.

No, but I won't count this guess, for the reason stated below. So you still have a free guess left.Aristocrat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 9:37 pmI will toss out George VIII of Georgia, for no reason other than they have a more interesting Wikipedia page than most of the other candidates I’ve come across.

To clear up some ambiguity, I am using the Wikipedia green map definition of Europe here. While some parts of Georgia appear to be included, most of it is not, including the capital Tbilisi, where I assume George VIII was born. If I had chosen someone from the far northern reaches of Georgia, I would have passed on the Europe question, so you can take present-day Georgia out of your list of potential birthplaces.
This also means that this person was not born in Siberia, but all of what is now European Russia is fair game (as long as they're not Russian), along with what is now Ukraine and European Turkey (although keep in mind the Lepanto question). Moldova is out because it does not have a Black Sea coast.
Re: 20 Questions Version 472
It is worth noting that Moldova (the modern country) is landlocked but as far as I understand from the Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moldavia), Moldavia (the historical country) was not always landlocked.DreamTrawler wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 8:54 pmI believe Moldova is landlocked therefore no Black Sea coast. But it looks like Georgia can be considered either Eastern Europe or Western Asia so maybe it’s still in play.

This one is really tough. Good luck to the rest.
Re: 20 Questions Version 472
The question about the Black Sea specifically mentioned modern borders though.yavuzovic wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 11:52 pmIt is worth noting that Moldova (the modern country) is landlocked but as far as I understand from the Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moldavia), Moldavia (the historical country) was not always landlocked.DreamTrawler wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 8:54 pmI believe Moldova is landlocked therefore no Black Sea coast. Re: 20 Questions Version 472
I don’t know if this was QM’s intent but calling out European Turkey made me look and apparently there were a bunch of Byzantine splinter states that stuck around after Constantinople fell. I will guess Thomas Palaiologos who seems at least more interesting than anyone tied to the Golden Horde or Crimean Khanate.
Re: 20 Questions Version 472
No, although that's an impressively good guess considering how constrained your options are.Aristocrat wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2025 12:49 amI don’t know if this was QM’s intent but calling out European Turkey made me look and apparently there were a bunch of Byzantine splinter states that stuck around after Constantinople fell. Re: 20 Questions Version 472
Not to get too metagamey but I remember in round 283 Hominidae once picked Boris I of Bulgaria, a seemingly obscure and random pick but a joke on the fact that the previous round was Boris Johnson. I wonder if there is some name related angle at play here.

Some kind of meta play is most likely at this point I thinkDreamTrawler wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2025 1:29 amNot to get too metagamey but I remember in round 283 Hominidae once picked Boris I of Bulgaria, a seemingly obscure and random pick but a joke on the fact that the previous round was Boris Johnson. Re: 20 Questions Version 472
My proposal for Q20:
Does his name appear on one of the following lists?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_state_leaders_in_the_15th_century
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_state_leaders_in_the_16th_century
Feel free (anyone) to ask this (or a modification of it) if you want to.
(I think I tend to wake up later in the morning than most of you all.) (Also, feel free to simply ask a different Q20.)

Re: 20 Questions Version 472
Should we maybe just ask one of those, to split the pool?
"Okay, quick question. The Internet. That's the one with e-mail, right?"

I wonder if that hint means this person is in the Asia section?Hominidae wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2025 1:09 pmYes.Ernst_Brenner wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2025 12:42 pmAll right.
