I don't think that would get a pass on the 2000 question though. I suspect we're looking for a movie released in 2001, maybe with trailers and stuff coming out in 2000.

I was imagining that Memento was based on a short story which was published after the movie, in 2001. This also explains the pass on written work.

It looks like Memento first played at a film festival in 2000, but did not get a wide release until 2001. I think this is a really promising guess.
