THE FINAL CHAPTER

It was bitterly cold in London that evening. Snow had started to fall. The smoke from a million chimneys gave it a grey, tainted hue.

Critics and social reformers might have suggested the judicial process could occasionally be tainted, also.

Mary Kelly was a prostitute and sometime petty criminal, but the force of the law had descended on her rather brutally that day.

TEMASEK22 has been lynched! He was Mary Jane Kelly, the Vanilla Londoner!

Across town, the bitter cold did not dissuade a group of carol singers. They strained their way through "Good King Wenceslas" as Lestrade passed them, not smiling, and turned into an alley.

Three shapes lurked in the gloom. Lestrade did not appear surprised to see them.

"Inspector, good evening to ye," said one of the three shapes.

"It ain't a particularly good evening, if you ask me, Mister Burke" scowled Lestrade. "This business with the bodies.... it's getting too dangerous. I can't keep you covered for much longer."

Burke smiled, and slipped the Inspector a small pouch. It clinked as Lestrade shuffled it into his overcoat pocket.

"Aye, aye," he nodded. "You're no wrong, Inspector. In fact, we're all awa back up tae Scotland the morn."

Lestrade looked relieved. "You are?"

"Aye, aye," nodded Burke again. "We've just a few..... loose ends to settle first, ken?"

One of the other shapes suddenly stepped forward. Lestrade spotted the glint of a knife in his hand. It was too late.
