NY Times best selling author?
Yes, this person has written a book which made the New York times bestseller list.
QM NOTE:
I feel this answer, while entirely correct, is likely to mislead you. Therefore I will very generously provide the additional clue that the book in question was not a novel.

You: Can you suggest a female musician, born before 1960, who wrote a book (that isn't a novel) that was on the New York Times bestsellers list?

Copilot:
Sure! Joan Baez, born in 1941, is a renowned folk musician who fits your criteria. She wrote a memoir titled “And a Voice to Sing With”, which was published in 1987 and became a New York Times bestseller.

Is there anything specific you’d like to know about her or her book?

Joan Baez is the correct answer but I don't much care for using an AI to play this game.

Tbh I suspect AI has been being used for some time now (nothing concrete, just a strong hunch)

For whatever it’s worth, I personally have not used AI for this game (outside of the annoying Google summaries that pop up) and would be down to make a (probably unenforceable) rule to avoid it in the future.

Jamie, I'm sorry I that ruined your QM experience by using AI. I wouldn't have done so had I known that it would have bothered you - I was just indulging in some personal silliness in terms of pushing the boundaries of the rules, perhaps in the same spirit as your mafia-themed avatars you sometimes use.

I know this was your first QM round in a while, and I don't want it to end on a sour note. I will happily have "Microsoft Copilot" be acknowledged as the winner of this round and pass QM powers back to you.

I've tried it in one, maybe two other rounds, but this is the first time it has "worked". (Before, I'd give it a list of several conditions and it would always give me an answer that failed one of the conditions. When I pointed this out to Copilot, it would cheerfully apologize, and suggest a different answer that also failed a condition. And so on. An interesting lesson, to be sure.) Now that I got it to work once, I don't plan on using it again in the future.

It just feels quite underwhelming if "Copilot" declares the answer, rather than you working it out yourself, even if people *have* been using AI-powered search tools. I recognise there's no explicit rule against it, and it can't be policed.

Maybe it's Copilot's turn to set the next round?

I agree. And that's why I won't use AI in the future for guessing in 20Q.

Okay. Well done, Copilot, ha.

Do you want me to set another one?

Yep; I think that's the best way to handle this.

Jamiet99uk: You should ask Copilot to come up with an extremely obscure entity so that you win the game, ha ha

Note: Game 392's subject will be set by me, not an AI.

I asked ChatGPT, "Can you suggest a subject for people to guess in a game of 20 Questions?"

It's first reply was: "A breadbox"

(By which I assume it means a bread bin).

So I said: "No, could you pick a person instead?"

It replied: "Sure! How about a Mailman?"

In the spirit of round 140, you could have picked Mr. McFeely.
