Is this person primarily known for the arts? (I acknowledge that a "yes" answer may be misleading, as you previously noted.)

Eh, I think I worked it all out? If I am correct, this was a nice puzzle posed by the QM.Spartaculous wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 1:23 amIs this person primarily known for the arts? (I acknowledge that a "yes" answer may be misleading, as you previously noted.)
If "yes" to the previous two questions, then:

Re: 20 ?s 332
huh. I was considering a martial artist but all the ones I could think of were born after 1850. Would being involved in the Boxer Rebellion be considered being involved in the politics of the Qing empire though?Spartaculous wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 2:25 amEh, I think I worked it all out? I think I said military or political figure so I would say yesDreamTrawler wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 2:41 amhuh. Re: 20 ?s 332
OMG a martial artist that makes so much more sense;
IF this person is a native chinese speaker
THEN
Is this person born in Southern China?
IF YES
Wong Fei Hung
IF this person is a native chinese speaker

Is this person born in Southern China?
IF YES
Wong Fei Hung

Re: 20 ?s 332
This is a *very* good shout. I think there is a very high chance the "misleading" tag is because this is a martial artist. If I had found Wong Fei Hung, I would have guessed him; I wasn't able to turn up any straight-up martial artists like him to guess.FlaviusAetius wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 2:53 amOMG a martial artist that makes so much more sense;

Wong Fei Hung
(By the way, that was Q20, I think, so get in free guesses while you can.)
The other clue from the QM was at the very beginning:FlaviusAetius wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 2:49 amI think I said military or political figure so I would say yesDreamTrawler wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 2:41 amhuh. The line "Don't say we didn't warn you" is something Chinese diplomats rarely say, but is usually followed by an attack on a foreign country of some kind (India in 1962, Vietnam in 1979). This led me to the Boxer Rebellion. This may or may not line up with Q11, but I will let the guess stand.

Yes.
No.Spartaculous wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 1:23 amIs this person primarily known for the arts? (I acknowledge that a "yes" answer may be misleading, as you previously noted.)
No, not born in Southern China. But considering your information, that was a very good guess.FlaviusAetius wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 2:53 amOMG a martial artist that makes so much more sense;

IF YES
Wong Fei Hung
Since none of you are very close, I'll give a hint. My comment was a reference to the fact that I'm bending, if not breaking, rule 6 here.

That means we're at only 19 questions then, right?wintergreen wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 10:17 amAnd, in fact, amend my answer to question 18 to a pass, assumed yes.

Re: 20 ?s 332
Clarification: you're confident that this person was a native speaker of a Sino-Tibetan language, but not confident that it was Chinese?

Re: 20 ?s 332
What an excellent puzzle you've selected, wintergreen. I'm stumped after hours of research. Because I have other things to do, I will submit my free guess, though I am fairly certain the odds are quite long.
Free guess: Kanaung Mintha.
Food for thought for other guessers: Not sure if your "bending rule 6" means it's a real person who inspired a fictional character, is super super obscure, or just something like an iteration of the Dalai Lama. Also it seems like we still have a wide array of countries bordering China, could be an obscure figure there, or someone from the Chinese diaspora of the 1800s? Or someone who shares one name with someone already on the list?
Anyway, I look forward to finding out. Enjoy your day!

Re: 20 ?s 332
I am wondering if this is a subject of a scientific study, or something like that. No idea who that would be.
Re: 20 ?s 332
Logically this means that "native speaker of a Sino-Tibetan language" should have been a pass as well.wintergreen wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 1:42 pmI'm not confident whether this person spoke Chinese or a non-Sino-Tibetan language.
This sounds like I'm trying to be annoying, but I think it could improve gameplay to get an extra question.
