I wasn't questioning the reason or legimitacy for requesting clarification. It is a question that should be counted towards the 20. I'll ask it a different way.

If the latter of the two definitions had been chosen would it have led to a different answer?
Thanks for clarifying. It does appear the answer to this question is "Yes".

Clarification requested: Do you mean "born in what was at the time one of...", or "born in a place that was, at some point in time, part of one of..."?
Hm - I meant the first one, though I guess it is a more niche question
Thanks for clarifying. No, this person was not born in what was at the time one of those civilizations.
After reading up on the civilization in question (I learned a lot of technicalities here), I think I should switch my answer to "Yes".

Since a "Yes" answer to this one implies a "Yes" answer to damo's, I will only count one question here. (I think I will count the other questions that have been asked, and simply observe that me getting tripped up by the technicalities here should be a decent-sized hint.)

I'm confused now. If the answer under def1 is 'Yes' then the answer under def 2 must be 'Yes' so the answer to my question would be 'No' (ie not different). Have I got this right? [Clarification not a Question!]

I'm sorry - I'm getting myself all confused here. You are correct (in this post), so the answer to your (previous) question should be "No".

SUMMARY

1,5. Real dead human or Hungarian Wikipedia article
2,4,6. Born during or after 30 May 1778, but before 15 March 1820
3. Born in what was, at the time, part of America (presumably USA), Mexico, the French Empire (presumably the first), Prussia, the Russian Empire, Buganda, Mughal India, Qing China, Meiji Japan, or Siam
7,9,10. Born in what is now European France or Germany
8. Primarily famous for politics, government, exploration, religion, or being royalty/nobility

Was this person primarily famous for exploration, religion, or being royalty/nobility?

Also, using this space to plug the currently forming mafia game, there's space for up to 3 more players and it would be fun to have another 20Q regular playing!

2 should be 21st November 1694 not 30th May 1778 (Voltaire's dob not dod)

I second the mafia plug

I think the time eligible is

21st November 1694 - July 4 1776 or Sep 3 1783

15 March 1820 - Aug 12, 1962

Edit: the end date would depend on the timeframes used for the French Empire and Prussia and could shorten the timeframe

Oh wow I can't read

I think it has to be in the second group, because I think Maine was part of the Massachusetts Bay colony since 1691, and it wasn't specified if only Massachusetts state was being counted.

@Spartaculous for the sake of determining the birth date, does Massachusetts Bay count as Massachusetts?
