I think it’s a mix of both. Sometimes people have someone in mind, other times they’re just having fun with it. That used to confuse me too, like when people would ask things like “real human born in Northern Hemisphere or fictional marsupial?”

For that other question maybe Hominidae wanted to eliminate New York specifically since it has a lot of famous denizens?
