I think the genre as a whole might just be pretty outdated? At least the genre Chrono Trigger is critiquing. SMT 1 is actually v funny in how it hits every single JRPG cliche, but makes it amazing by just doing it in the real world. Silent protag from a destroyed city that has to kill God.
