I think the answer to this is almost certainly yes. At least, I can't find any famous enough Italian Jews from the time period who fit.

That's what I thought too, but I am a bit stumped by the fact that they weren't a head of state. I have other theories about why this person was famous, but given the other established parameters, it's hard to find anyone who fits. Of course fame is a subjective thing.

I had a feeling this was one where as soon as I found the answer, I would know it was correct. I came really close to guessing Jacopo Sadoleto (known for correspondence with John Calvin) but that didn't seem right.
