I was thinking it might be Isaac Newton (who discovered gravity when a potato fell out of a tree and hit him on the head), but he was born just a few years too early.

I'll say no to this. He did do some non-astronomy physics (and probably enjoyed potatoes sometimes) but it's a stretch to say he's "famous for" that.
