So, it's a European non royal Roman Catholic native speaker of a Romance language who is some sort of military leader oft portrayed with a sword born 1600- 1675ish and died after 1690 but not on Jamie's famous list.

I think the military bit is either misleading or we are dealing with an obscurity.

I'm flummoxed.
Check your math. Where did you get 1675?

The military part was not misleading. Asking after royalty was a waste.

architect probably isn't it -> sword thing

non-royal military leader suggests to me a rebel leader of some sort.

googling and wikipedia doesn't turn up any viable candidates from spain, france, or portugal - italy seems too confused at this time to have anyone

Was he some kind of military commander or officer?
Because the question didn't leave much room for royalty, who by this period of European history weren't often commanders
Uh, I mean, that's wrong. Lots of the people in the list I posted were both military leaders and members of their country's royal family.
I co-asked the question not to eliminate royalty but non-royalty.

Just to elaborate, on the list that I linked to, for example, four of the first 10 people listed are royalty who were also prominent military commanders:

#3 Gustavus Adolphus
#7 Philippe II, Prince Regent of France
#8 Prince Rupert of the Rhine
#10 Prince Eugene of Savoy

did any of them primarily speak a Romance language? Perhaps in Belgium (nothing turns up) or Switzerland (peasant revolt of 1653 has some people of note, but their deaths seem uncontroversial

Good point Bona.

In the 1600's the capital of the Holy Roman Empire was Frankfurt and most of its commanders would have spoken German.

Wasn't what is now Northern Italy part of HRE? Wouldn't they have spoken a Latin based lingo. Not that I can identify any candidates.

I think we need a clue.

I can't even think of a decent 20th question. Possibilities might be:

French?
Iberian?

Nearly all of that territory was lost by the early 1600s.
