Lets put a fine point on it: is this person a professional athlete?

On the understanding that this includes all professional sports with a strong physical element (eg yes to boxing and handball, no to snooker and darts), yes.
Well narrowed, sir

Unfortunate timing, sir. No. Depending on how generous I'm feeling this may or may not count as a question

Does the professional sport played by this person involve a spherical ball?

Approximately spherical, yes. If you were to ask the man on the street the shape of said ball, the answer you would get is "round".MerryBBuck wrote: ↑Mon May 30, 2022 3:52 pmDoes the professional sport played by this person involve a spherical ball?

Yes. He is an association footballer, known by posh Brits as soccer (or socca) to differentiate it from rugby football (known by posh Brits as rugger)

I'm pretty familiar with English football, and could probably narrow it down in 3 or 4 questions, but I'll wait and let others play along.
For my fellow players, consider narrowing down by what division, what team, what position ...

Has he retired from playing football at a professional level?

Well, good going with the questions, well done. Since my knowledge of british football (especially if it isn't premier league for which I might have a tiny chance to know) is limited, I think I'll abstain for further questions, but I suggest that the following questions might contain the difficulty of the league, the location of the home club and/or the colour of the home club(s) to further focus down on said person.
I'll just put here the two persons I can think of on top of my head for the guesses, then I'm out: Is it either David Beckham or Wayne Rooney?
Good luck with the guessing!

As some of you are getting a little hesitant at this point, thinking perhaps that this person may be an obscure footballer rather than someone in the top tier of their nation's footballing league system, or an international player, it may be worth a question to establish the fact.
It is interesting, as a random observation, that a question asked early in the prior 2 rounds has not been asked in this one. This may be a hint...
... or a red herring

Did he play in either the English Premier League, or the English Championship, during the 2021-22 season?

David Beckham retired from playing football in 2013.
Wayne Rooney retired from playing football in January 2021.
So it's not either of them.

I think we can probably also rule out Bobby Charlton, George Best, and Stanley Matthews.
