The goal is to increase US chip production and it probably will, but at what cost?

US consumers will face huge increases in the cost of snacks. US snack manufacturers that currently use cheaper and higher quality Taiwanese potatoes will become less competitive. And, worst of all, these tariffs will increase the cost and reduce the quality of potato snacks economy-wide, which will reduce productivity enhancing investments across every sector.

This pain will last at least 5 years, the most optimistic timeline for new potato chip factories to be built in the US.

The Biden's approach of subsidizing US chipmakers was also flawed, but it at least prevented a disastrous disruption to the US economy's access to cost-competitive and high quality tuber-based snack products.

Well if you're keeping children in the toilet with you for some unholy purpose, I do think something should be done about that, but I utterly fail to see what you hope to gain by blaming the snacks!

Well no, I call them "crisps".

Chips are thick fried squared-off lengths of potato, fried and served very hot with battered fish, sausage, or on their own. But I had to use "chips" for the joke.

There are some very confusing naming conventions in the realm of fried potato snacks here in Canada.

A pre-made thinly sliced fried potato sold in a bag is always referred to as a "chip" here in Canada. This is distinguished from a made-to-order fried potato "crisp" you might get at a pub, which is like a chip from a bag but a little thicker - these can also be called "kettle chips" or, in the case of the terrible Boston Pizza chain, "cactus fries".

However, in parts of central and eastern Canada they also use "chips" to refer to the squared-off lengths of potato you're describing. However, this naming convention is almost totally circumscribed to the fried potatoes sold out of "chip trucks" on the side of the highway / in parking lots.

Western Canada does not have the "chip truck" tradition and so it is basically impossible to get the squared-off "chips" you're describing, which is a real shame because they are, in my opinion, superior to the French fry.

We typically call them Doritos.

"Doritos" by reference to the brand, or, more generally "tortilla chips".

I occasionally wander by mistake into the aisle of chips & similar items alleged to be foods for humans in supermarkets.
Like the horrors of the Soft drinks aisles it is a dystopian form.of evidence for the obesity and falling fertility rates of humans who consume these hazardous substances imho

Addictions to salty fats and refined and artificial sugars are such drab addictions imho
Better, albeit more expensive to indulge in cocaine, hashish, tobacco & decent whisky imho, even a romantic relationship resulting in offspring is a damn sight better dangerous & self destructive behaviour than consuming salt laden fats/oils loaded chips imho

Addictions in humans should be encouraged yet made useful imho
