This is the observer thread for the Pairs Diplomacy Game. The main game thread here is for diplomats only:
https://webdiplomacy.net/contrib/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5672
Anyone outside the game may comment on the game here. Generals may NOT post in this thread.
Here is the game link:

Happy observing!

Agreed, this was an unusual concept and I'm interested to see how it all plays out.

Looks like all 7 players have joined and the game is up and running! (No moves have happened yet though.) Here's the url if you want to spectate:

Everyone can see this thread. I guess we ought to think about how much commentary from the "peanut gallery" is appropriate. Is it OK to praise/criticize diplomatic approaches of the diplomats, or moves of the generals? What about recommending? I'd be hesitant about saying something here that could interfere with the game.

I'm fine with commentary on the game or even praise or criticism, but perhaps outright suggestions to the players or blatant attempts to influence the outcome would be inappropriate. Anyone else have opinions on this?

I concur with this. I think commentary should be made just as one would make commentary to the person sitting next to them at home watching through a television. Not directed to the players, but to other viewers.

Agreed. Having third parties commenting a game is a false good idea because they will influence this unfairly.

Maybe the observer mode would represent the sound of the people, and their opinions maybe affects the politician's decisions, maybe not. :)

Agreed, we don't want to influence the game.
It's definitely some work, though, to read through the press and then correlate it against the resultant moves - but I think commenting in the form of "diplomat said X, general did Y" would be acceptable?
Spring 01 looks pretty standard from just the moves - A Smy H was interesting.

Probably my favorite opening to play as Turkey. I also like holding Marsielles as France, and - on occasion - holding Munich as Germany. I suppose I just like holds. And then of course there's holding Venice as Italy, although that's hardly a matter of personal preference.
Haven't thoroughly checked the press yet, but have any generals already gone against the will of their diplomats? It would certainly be too early to do so.

Despite the agreement to a triple alliance, it seems my general has sent my fleet into the Ionian Sea, possibly due to the late deal. Rest assured that I mean no hostilities to my neighbours in the East. Moving forward, I will be more transparent about my orders to prevent it from happening again. My recommendations to my general for this turn are:
- A VEN hold;
- A APU -> TUN;
- F ION CONV A APU -> TUN;
unless any of my allies have any objections.
- Victor Emmanuel III of Italy

I nominate this missive from the Sultan to Italy for Most Entertaining Diplomatic Communique of 1901:
We understand that inter-departmental communication does not rank with cuisine, art, music, and insulting hand gestures among your civilization's greatest strengths.

A fairly straightforward game so far. I appreciate penguin signing every letter. The generals and diplomats are trusting each other. I am enjoying some of the subtle messages from the generals... for them, it is like a gunboat. Which I had not anticipated.
Weren't the generals going to be anonymous...?

We know who are generals, we don’t who is a general for what country.
