The End Times Cometh

#1 Post by Octavious » Mon Dec 04, 2023 7:07 pm

As the world hurtles towards the end of days, the omens are clear to see. Sure, it's easy to ignore the three headed goats being born and dreams of cows eating each other, but then two of the holy trinity of unlikely Margaret Thatcher praisers made themselves known. The leader of the British Labour Party (perhaps not quite so crazy as it may once have been) and the President of Argentina have both said what a jolly impressive woman she was. All we need is for Jamiet99uk to do the same and I'll be spending the Christmas holidays building a bomb shelter in the back garden.

So what our your signposts of the apocalypse and, perhaps more importantly, have they happened yet?

Bird populations. The trees and skies were filled with birds when I was a child (1950s and early 1960s)

Octavious misses brainbomb's posts, I see.

I actually just attended a lecture on the collapse of civilization around 1177 BCE. Pro tip: be near a body of freshwater.

Of course I should have said otherwise, if only to cause Octavious to waste time digging an enormous hole in his garden.

There's still time... and it's not as if the outcome of a bet is riding on it or anything

The Doomsday Clock is as close as it's ever been to midnight, worse than at any point during the Cold War: https://thebulletin.org/doomsday-clock/

It's still deeply unfashionable to talk about the nuclear risk surrounding Russia's war against Ukraine. This long period of stalemate has been the relatively safe part - when either side begins to lose, the risks will spike enormously. Total nuclear war is not a likely outcome, but it's far from impossible.

A plausible conflict over Taiwan would come with even greater nuclear risk.

In my lifetime, many more nations will get the bomb. Some non-state actors might too.

I don't tell people who are angry or upset about my prediction to shut up.
I encourage them to be noisy dissidents.
Have a safe, merry Christmas and happy new year jamiet99uk

@jamiet99uk~ that is a wonderfully British photo of your good self, looking dapper and rather handsome imho. Roger Whittaker has a song about Durham, his song, "The Last Goodbye" is superb & sad. I love the lyrics, reminds me of the War stories I heard when I was a fledgling. My dad used to tell me stories about the merchant ship Jervis Bay and it's Captain, Fearless Finnegan.
MS Jervis Bay used to regularly visit Port Adelaide before the War, then was hurriedly converted to an Armed Merchant Escort ship in, fit a few old naval guns.
MS Jervis Bay took on a German Battleship in the North Atlantic to protect a convoy, a heroic fight to delay the German Battleship while the convoy scattered & fled, including an oil tanker that was set on fire, abandoned by it's crew, then the crew went back aboard, extinguished the fires and got the oil tanker to Britain.
Fearless Finnegan was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.
Which he deserved, unlike Corporal Ben Roberts Smith imho.
Fearless Finnegan got that nickname for his boisterous drinking & pugilistic tendencies when ashore in the Hotels of Port Adelaide

MS Jervis Bay was lost with all her Officers and crew, sunk by the German battleship

Yes I am familiar with that song. Ironically, Roger Whittaker was not familiar with Durham; he originally wrote the song about the nearby city of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, but his producer suggested "Durham Town" sounded better. Still, it is a pleasant song. He has a nice voice.

BTW it isn't a photo of me. It's a picture of the character "Cole Phelps" from the video game "L.A. Noire", of which I am very fond. He is from Los Angeles.
