Re: Muting threads

#21 Post by peterlund » Sun May 13, 2018 9:36 pm

What is needed is to stop people that never have played a single game of diplomacy from posting on the forum. Then we get rid of the spam posters selling diplomas and other shit on the forum.

And then we need the old forum possibility to block thread popping up on the front page from people that you have added as "foes".

When these 2 things have been fixed, we can let all thread be presented on the user front page. This is what I want. I do not want WebDip to censure any threads for me!

You don't think slapping a silence on every new member may be a little bit overkill? Nice that you're giving the matter some thought and all, but unless we want to drive new members away and kill off the site for good I think it's probably best to give that option a miss.

I think jmo's NoPreview solution holds quite a lot of promise. Here's hoping it's high up on the priority queue for when new coding becomes possible again.

Seriously, what's going on with this? Is it now site policy to turn politics notifications on and off with no announcement based solely on whether jmo likes the discussion or not? What was it about the Israel thread that was so objectionable anyway?

Yesterday's update overwrote the recent change removing politics from the front page due to a quirk in the software version control. This shouldn't happen again. Politics threads will stay off the front page.

You can thank JamesYanik's Palestine thread for reminding ghug. That thread wasn't for discussion, it was for trolling (e.g. like the Palestinian == Nazi propaganda BS).

Let's try to keep discussion of political threads to the political forum. What I may or may not think about any specific thing one of our members chooses to spew has no impact here.

Ah, so the policy of hide it away and hope it dies is still in force then? I reckon you'll pull it off, too. Congratulations.

If you enjoy politics just go on the subforum. I for one, enjoy not seeing the idiocy on this website

And you have got your way. But let's not pretend that taking the debates off of the front page will simply see them carry on as before but hidden from those who don't want to be reminded they exist. Out of sight is out of mind, most members will probably never even come across them, and they will go from being dynamic and lively debates involving many members to a few people making an occasional post.

Debate is fundamental to diplomacy, niceness is not. Killing off debate for the sake of making things look nice strikes me as lunacy.

Oh shut up Octavious, making huge changes to the site runs the risk of bugs. The only bug so far was politics threads started showing up again in the home page. I'd thought perhaps I wouldn't have to ruin my evening redoing that change and that it could wait a day or two. But nope.

Marking this as resolved.

Courteous as always, jmo.

My apologies for assuming a bug was actually the site leadership listening to and acting on the concerns of its members. That you have apparently gone out of your way to disprove such a notion is... remarkable

This was the site leadership going out of its way to listen to the concerns of its members.

For years, the forum was a terrible, terrible place. I remember this with some fondness, as do you and many others, but countless people were turned away from the forum and even the site by it, and this was expressed to us publicly and privately. Several years ago, there was a decision made to do something about it, and while it was a slow and sometimes ineffective process, the forum did get largely "cleaner". This upset many people such as yourself, who remember the old forum with a fondness I occasionally do. We respect the feelings of that contingent because you are our members too and because we do sympathize, but you are significantly smaller. Allowing that forum to become the wild west again is an attempt to return a little of that back to you, but the compromise is that we're making it a little harder for that content to scare people away.

I'm sorry you feel this is insufficient, but it's really the most we can give you.

I do the code work, and when the site leadership requested I immediately fix a bug introduced I did so. What’s absolutely absurd is you accusing me of randomly unhiding and rehiding threads based on my personal interest. So if you’re going to make absurd accusations about me then I’m certainly not going to be courteous in return.

C'mon, ghug, the forum hasn't been anything like the wild west for years, and nor do the forum rules allow anything remotely like that to return. To be honest I can't see any practical difference between the politics rules and the wider forum rules.

This isn't about reviving the forum glory days, this is pleading with you not to kill off the last remotely interesting part of the forum that still remains. It's about keeping hold of a reason to keep coming back.

Randomly? Sorry, jmo, but when you post

I see I urgently need to re-remove the politics thread from the main page to get this fucking drivel out of sight.

in a thread and then the politics threads are hidden again it does give the impression that you are reacting to it, rather than it being a random event. How absurd of me to think these events were remotely connected.
