Fairbot vs FB

#1 Post by Doug7878 » Sun Dec 25, 2022 10:38 pm

I played a number of AvF games against Fairbot. My game history now shows that I played these games against "FB". Is FB a re-naming of what is now an older version of Fairbot ?

The evidence you have supplied suggests that it is.

Yes. I'm actually curious whether the Fairbot that is now renamed as "FB" was the bot during its development, and Fairbot that exists now is the finished product.

It seems to me they have toned down the bot's skill level considerably. The old Fairbot (FB) was close to unbeatable. It played over 5,000 games and won 80% of them. It drew another 12%. I suspect the majority of those draws were games it would have won had they continued to a solo or stalemate. The current Fairbot is a decent enough player, but it's only winning 45% of its games. I have played against both and the difference is pretty obvious.

I think Kestas said in another post that Facebook shuttered their AI division, and so he replaced their bot with the other one. Maybe.

I can confirm these observations. I’ve only scored a handful of wins against the previous bot (not for lack of trying, it took me over 50 attempts to beat it for the first time :). Now, I routinely beat the bot both as France and Austria.

Not sure what’s worse, the sheer frustration of playing against an almost unbeatable AI, or the ease with which it’s beatable now…

Curious, was there ever a series of games run (behind the scenes) where the old Fairbot played itself in France vs. Austria?

I wouldn’t be surprised if these bots have more experience playing Diplomacy against each other than all humans playing Diplomacy put together

Good point. If I could ever see those results, I think they would be interesting.
