Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
To the southern fried team and future Brother Bored content that does not exist in our reality now, I apologize. Though I am envious that they will not have suffer through the gunboat games I'm about to. On to the finals...I guess. If we want to :)
P.S. Special thanks to goldfinger for his work on this. It's a big tasks and adds a lot to the hobby.

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
By the way, can we get a whoop whoop for the Midwest? Two teams! We're becoming the incubator for Dip talent in this world :)
Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
3 of our 4 members are pretty much on the Great Lakes too. Maybe that's the source of our success. Just drinking the effluent from your Diplomacy incubators.

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
Some interesting facts about the first round games, just looking at the final numbers.
1. No solo victories, although there were at least two serious attempts ending in one 17- and one 15-dots board tops. I think this shows a general good level of play.
2. In absence of solos the crucial point becomes how often the team gets to participate in the draw. In both groups we have two teams that were defeated only once, and they are at the two top positions in their group ranking.
Teams that were defated twice have been fighting for the third/fourth position, 3 of them in Group A, 2 of them in Group B. Teams with more than two defeats are far behind.
2.1 There's a difference in being defeated in FP/PP or GB, of course, since they have different weights, but it has not been relevant in terms of qualifications.
In Group A, Prosecco gained 75.5 points over Greatest Lakes due to the latter's GB defeat; while the former's FP defeat costed 149.0 points.
In group B, we can say that Eastern Canada's defeat in PP equals one of Great Lakes' defeats in FP; but EC's defeat in a GB costed them 72.0 points, while GL' second defeat in FP costed them more than 150 - even the poor performance of Eastern Canada in FvA could not revert that difference
3. FvA games could have been far more decisive that they really have been. But:
3.1 Not counting FvAs both the group rankings would have been the same, but the best fourth would have been SE USA from Group A instead of Great Lakes from Group B, for just a one point gap.
3.2 If on the other hand FvAs had just a little more weight, say 30 points per game, then everything would have been different. My Prosecco team would have passed Greatest Lakes, by just 1.5 points, and Great Plains would have passed Brazil, but that doesn't matter.
What really matters is, in both Groups the third and fourth ranked teams would be inverted, with the now-fourth Sons of Vlad winning by 5 points on the now-fourth Eastern Canada. So Eastern Canada would have been eliminated instead of SE USA.
So in both cases, no FvAs or 30-points FvAs, SE USA would qualify

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
It was pretty close that Sons of Vlad and we would have tied at 355.5 for best fourth place. Not sure what Goldie would have done... Or what's gonna happen if we tie Sons of Vlad for the tournament win in the finals.

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
You know, I don't have a tiebreaker in place for the Group Stages because its just so unlikely it would ever happen....but this was close indeed. And if Sons of Vlad and Great Lakes tie in the Finals, that does make the tournament's only tiebreaker invalid.
I would honestly have to consult with the moderator team on constructing a second tiebreaker that seems fair.
Either way, Yonni's standings are correct. Let me just finish the addition for him

*Greatest Lakes - 438
*Prosecco - 419.5

Group B

*Eastern Canada - 370.5
*Greatest Lakes - 355.5
e - Brazil - 236
e - Great Plains' - 231
e - Three-Fifths Australia - 20
I've edited the Finals page on the tournament site - I've just repeated the rosters from the Group stages. I will not be editing that to show any changes captains may make with subs, shuffling, etc.
I'll try to get the Finals games set up tomorrow, but this is a busy time of year for me with work, so it may wait until Tues.
Congratulations to all of our finalist teams! And for those eliminated, thank you for playing. Please keep watch to root for your favorite (or most hated) compatriots in the Finals!

Woo! Go Europe!
Come find me if you all need a second sub for the Sons of Vlad.

And the fourth member of Eastern Canada (me) lives on the Gulf of St Lawrence, so the effluent passes down through here eventually too.3 of our 4 members are pretty much on the Great Lakes too. Maybe that's the source of our success. Just drinking the effluent from your Diplomacy incubators.
Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
Thank you again Goldie for your work with this tournament. It has been great fun (other than watching the paint dry in those last two GB games).

I think the two teams should be called “Boring Puddle A” and “Boring Puddle B”. Or maybe just Thing 1 and Thing 2

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
The saddest thing is, we lost a lot of appetizing food, from Sausages to Cheesesteaks and even Fried Supply Centers.
Luckily we still have some Yorkshire Pudding and some Prosecco (I don't want to know what a Son of Vlad would consider a proper diet)

I resent your assertion that I live pretty much on the great lakes
