Webdip is Taking Over World Dip Con - April 4-6 in San Francisco
Friends,
Below is a standard invitation to World Dip Con in San Francisco in April from the tournament organizers. That's all well and good, and there is plenty of useful info in there, but let's talk about the main reason to go to World Dip Con: WEBDIP IS TAKING OVER! Let's occupy World Dip Con and show these Plane Ticket Diplomacy Goons how it's done.
Who's with me!?!??!

I'd like to invite you to join the biggest Diplomacy convention of 2025 in San Francisco. The 21-year running Whipping tournament will host World DipCon, a gathering of Diplomacy players from around the world, over the weekend of April 4-6. We'll have 4 rounds of Diplomacy games to crown the 2025 World Champion, along with social and hobby events. All levels of experience and skill are welcome to participate. We already have over 50 players from 4 continents registered!
You can see all of the details at the WDC2025 website https://www.thenadf.org/world-dipcon-2025/ and find a registration link, venue information, and how to book a room at the venue at a highly discounted rate. Early registration is approaching on February 7, so now is a great time to start making plans!
Any questions, feel free to reach out to @The Agman or email [email protected]. Hope to see you there.

(Pssssssst, we’re still taking over World Dip Con, even if it’s just me who’s going!
Re: Webdip is Taking Over World Dip Con - April 4-6 in San Francisco
Hehe the group of people from SF who use webDip and are into F2F, and actually browse the forums, probably won't be taking over anything larger than a phone booth unfortunately ;p
What's the overlap between the F2F and online community btw? Does everyone play online or do they not know we exist?

Good question! I think there is more overlap than you think. I have been to one other face-to-face tournament (World Dip Con in Washington DC in 2018) and at that single tournament, I met probably 15 people who I had originally known from webdiplomacy or playdiplomacy.kestasjk wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2025 10:47 amHehe the group of people from SF who use webDip and are into F2F, and actually browse the forums, probably won't be taking over anything larger than a phone booth unfortunately ;p

Since then, Covid and the advent of virtual diplomacy has increased cross-polinization a lot. And the cross-platform Discord tournaments of Nexus and Olympus have brought the online communities closer and brought more players from plane ticket diplomacy into the big leagues. I feel like Diplomacy communities are becoming more centralized and more aware of each other. Let's push it even further.
You definitely don't have to live in San Francisco to attend this tournament. Folks are going to be flying in from continents far away. This is for a world championship, and a chance to meet Balki!

I will be there, just haven't signed up yet. I am really good at getting my ass kicked. Last year in Milan, the French cleaned house. Very clever players. Americans are brutes.

That is crazy! nobody is going to the world championship?
There will be a lot of former world champions there.
My first face to face game I played was at WDC in Washington DC maybe in 2020. I ended up, I think, in the top 1/3 of players in standings. I didn't know crap. I still don't. It was a lot of fun.
Diplomacy players are an odd lot. We lie to each other, destroy each others' games, and love each other for it. There is a real comraderie there.
If you can make it, I strongly advise you: Come to SF. You won't forget it. It is the stuff of memories.

Re: Webdip is Taking Over World Dip Con - April 4-6 in San Francisco
I was in Milan last year for WDC. I got my ass kicked.
I had two ex-world champions at my first board. We three were in the west. These two guys didn't trust each other at all. One guy would promise me a SC if I would ally with him. So I did. Then the other would promise me a SC if I changed alliances to him. So I did. And it went like that the entire game. They ended up with few SCs, and I commanded the West. I felt smart.
The other two boards, I was betrayed by my trusted allies and got my ass kicked.

Not going to the U.S. while Agent Orange is in charge there.

Agreed, poor choice of words. While he has not been replaced and he and his puppet master continue to roam causing chaos.dargorygel wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 12:27 pmHe is hardly 'in charge.'Ernst_Brenner wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 11:06 amNot going to the U.S. while Agent Orange is in charge there.

The F2F community certainly knows about online stuff, especially since a lot of the current best F2F players are WebDip alums!
