Cripes, not sure how I missed this. I was busy recruiting more. Including myself there's two others. Might just continue making the second team or see what numbers are like.

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
Several players have reached out to me about why I should not compete in the WebDiplomacy World Cup because of the cheating that happened in the last two while I was away.
After corroborating their story with someone I believe to be impartial that holds even less impatience for drama than I do, I have decided not to participate. I won't go into further details because threats of a sitewide ban have already been issued for those that tried before, but I will say that covering this up only weakens WebDiplomacy's reputation with the other Diplomacy communities.
This sort of thing is why I never allowed mods or devs to participate in any of my anonymous tournaments even before it was a sitewide rule and all of those involved should be ashamed of themselves.
This has nothing to do with Computer_Genius not being allowed to play because he was and likely still is going to play. I wish Team Toronto all the best and will hopefully be announcing a revival of the Gunboat Tournament sometime after the holiday.

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
I really wish people would message me privately before posting things that they have no idea about. I've checked with most of the aggrieved sources, and "several" is probably a stretch. For someone who supposedly has no patience for drama, you're sure inviting it.
There are no sitewide bans being threatened. Nothing is being covered up. Due to the problems caused last time, both jmo and MM have been issued a 1-tournament ban by *me* in my capacity as tournament director for the uproar both caused. And no cheating occurred in the last tournament because the posts in question were personally approved by *me* before they happened. If you think that means webdiplomacy is getting a bad rap, you haven't been paying attention to big tournaments held elsewhere.
I am also unaware of any cheating that happened during the 2016 iteration of the tournament.
Computer_genius remains barred from the first stage of this tournament due to low RR and CDs in past tournaments, and all future tournament requests must be approved by the mod team.
And let that be the end of this discussion, and let's get back to signing up teams.

Sorry for this brief aside...
FWIW - I handled that situation extremely poorly, to say the least, and I have many regrets. I stand 100% behind my assessment of the situation, but not my personal behavior, so I fully accept goldie's decision. I have not, am not, and will not discourage anyone from playing in this tournament, as I am very curious to see who will win!

Goldfinger, are the great lakes team and the democracy sausages being accepted?
Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
After hearing the story, I asked three others way too busy to play much these days two simple questions:
Did JMO cheat? (All 3 yes).
Are members that reported this cheating barred from the tournament by demand of JMO? (All 3 yes).
That’s it.
I’m all for volunteer developers improving upon the site, but not at the expense of giving the site a bad name and banning others by his threatening to quit if he’s not allowed to cheat.
Moderators and developers MUST be above reproach. There can be no leeway given. And trying to sweep cheating under the rug just makes you complicit in it.
And yes, using your inside knowledge of the website to break anonymity in order to disrupt a game from being played fairly IS cheating. Especially after pushing code to remove the ability for regular players to do the same.

Sounds like jmo got a one tournament ban so what's your problem now?

Rehashing old debates that have already been resolved is not going to solve anything. If I recall correctly, jmo was cleared of wrongdoing from that game. Nevertheless, he is still barred from participating in this tournament.Geofram wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 8:36 pmAfter corroborating their story with someone I believe to be impartial that holds even less impatience for drama than I do, I have decided not to participate. Still, if you have issues with how *this* tournament is being run, please contact the TD and/or the Mod/Admin team directly and I'm sure they will review your concerns. As a former mod, I would think that you of all people should be aware that making a stink in the forum for seemingly no reason is not the way to bring up your concerns on this site.

While not entirely sure how this changed the tournament's outcome, I recall vixol, from team Sweden, being spotted in more than one game in the finals!goldfinger0303 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 9:31 pmI am also unaware of any cheating that happened during the 2016 iteration of the tournament.

Goldie why would Marx be banned? I don't recall any rule breaking. Also it's been two years I don't understand why anyone would be banned for what happened.
I personally think this issue was stupid two years ago and continues to be now. But I wouldn't ban anyone for simply being annoying.

Still looking for one more full press player in the Great Plains region of the united states, anywhere from the foothills of the Rocky's to the farmlands of Illinois.

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
Hi all,
At this point in time to encourage more teams to form I will be asking team applicants to limit themselves to five members. My ideal for the tournament is the 28 team format (never been done yet!), so if areas are looking like they have 6-7 willing participants, I'm encouraging everyone to split the team in two and recruit some more.
