Re: Do you change your style according to the country you roll?
I strongly agree that a different style of play is needed for each power, especially in gunboat. I suppose I sparked your thinking on this President Eden, from our previous conversations. Here are important strategic considerations and how they can give rise to different playstyles: England: Gaining...

Re: (bi)annual WebDip Gunboat tournament?
I strongly urge a scoring system that values draws, such as the one suggested by CCR. I think that a scoring system that treats all outcomes other than "solo win" as equal encourages a style of play that one rarely sees in high-level gunboat games. I think it is reasonable to say that a player who ...

Re: Has Diplomacy Regressed to Just Lying?
Most Diplomacy games, even ones played online, don't involve that much lying. If you feel you are being excessively lied to, maybe you're doing something that makes players want to lie to you. For example, some players enjoy the simplicity and ease of simply presuming that their rivals are telling t...

Re: Gunboat Strategy: France
If I knew NOTHING about the metagame I was in, I would open: Bre>MAO Par>Bur Mar:S:Par>Bur I would make this opening because it is the strongest defensive posture, and I cannot simply assume that Germany will not open to Burgundy (in my opinion, new players love to make that opening). Furthermore, m...

Re: Thinking about a casual, instructional game format
I am interested in this project. I would be willing to walk other players through my game.
I don't think the game has to be unranked necessarily; I would trust the actual players in the game not to cheat. Already have to do that anyways.

I will play the higher-pot game. Hope that stimulates interest. Not much time left to join though.

Re: Gunboat Strategy: England
I notice you advocate for England helping Germany into Belgium in 1901. I think in gunboat there's probably no getting around this, as there's no way for England to negotiate her way into Belgium with Germany's or France's blessing. This makes me think, though, that Sweden should normally be going ...

Re: Gunboat Strategy: England
That journal was unquestionably the highest-caliber contribution to gunboat strategy and thinking in site history, and possibly on the entirety of the Internet. It is without equal in anything I've read about the variant. Thank you friend. That's the highest compliment I've gotten on anything I've ...

Re: Gunboat Strategy: England
Wow wow wow, I am so pleased that some folks are still reading my journal. Thanks for referencing that President Eden -- and I am a little moved by your implicit compliment that my writings have inspired you to think more deeply about Gunboat strategy. I'm intrigued that you're coming around to my w...

Re: Unable to save orders / load
I disabled my VPN and it worked. My friend managed to get orders in but I don't know what happened. For the life of me I don't know why my VPN would cause the problem but I toggled it several times and it definitely was the problem. So it's resolved for me, thanks for offering to take a further look...

Specifically, if I click “ready”, nothing happens and I load a blank webpage. Not 404. Just blank. Happens on my phone and my PC.

[ACCEPTED] Unable to save orders / load
Anybody else having problems tonight? I am unable to save orders for a specific gunboat game (I can get to the page, but when I click "save" nothing happens the screen goes blank). One of my friends says he can't get the website to load at all.

Re: Chelsea Manning Running for US Senate
I have not been this intrigued by a U.S. candidacy announcement in years. I say, why the hell not? Many important political figures have served jail time, especially for politically-charged offenses. Unmemorable political figures often do heinous acts in their free time and suffer little consequence...

I PM'd the password but I don't know if you got it since the game hasn't started.
I'm trying to get the game going today so whoever is interested and the first to join can get the PW from me.

1 more for private Ancient Med gunboat
Skill level of the players is moderate. Willing to play with anybody who seems serious about finishing out the game. Disclaimer: 1 player is my sister, 1 is my friend, 1 is my apprentice (hence a private game). All have played gunboats with me and are respectful about the rules. http://webdiplomacy....

Re: Gunboat Strategies
Some moves are unpredictable because they are weak. I advise against making unpredictable moves for the sake of unpredictability. Tactically, "predictable" and "strong" are often the same thing. For example, in a high-level game it is easy to predict the opening moves and first few turns' follow up ...
