Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

As somewhat OCD about these sorts of things and an accountant by profession you numbers both being "essentially" but not actual the same as mine fill with a cold sense of dread. A mystery I must unravel. If not too onerous if you could let me know where the differences are via PM so I can investigat...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

Certainly a marathon not a sprint... On the basis of some quick mental maths I have the scores as follows (I always seem to be a decimal or so if which I can never figure out why but shouldn't make a difference): 1.Belgian Bulldog 157.5 2.Swordsman 98.3 3.Brumark 75.5 4.Teccles 55.7 5.Your Humble Na...

Re: Books on playing Diplomacy

I would echo the Richard Sharpe recommendation. It was what I read when I started and is very helpful to get a grip with the starts and build out from there, especially as it is a whole publication which looks at each country in the same way. Jays point that nothing is absolute is spot on.

Re: Rewards for Face to Face Tournament Winners

Now I like fame and riches as much as the next, but for future development I do wonder if there might want to be some recognition that not all tournaments are equal. I feel over-rewarded for finishing second in a relatively piddly tournament compared to say WDC. Practically I realise that may simply...

Anyone else feeling that this pause thing has got out of hand? I understand the intention behind it but it seems to be playing out in quite an aggressive fashion

Re: MaccCon Autumn 2019

We have 10 definites (as definite as any one is on these things) plus 6 or so reasonably possibles. So it will happen for those of you considering it. Getting up to three boards would be great. Its quite fun watching (fairly) good online players (from the playdip stock, I will let you make your own ...

I notice you have failed to mention the 108 steps between the hotel and the venue.
Well that might put people off now wouldn't it?

Re: MaccCon Autumn 2019

Hello all, we are now moving into trying to get numbers and locking this down. This was mainly from playdip (where I am from myself, just spendning the summer here as part of ODC). We are hoping to get 2-3 boards going. Currently have one boards worth of confirmed attenders (Claesar hope you can sti...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

Durga, I know you are keen on maintaining the mask of anonymity - which I of course support - so I just wanted to check something. Can I assume given the number of players and that this information is deducible pretty quickly that sharing broad time zones (eg us, Europe, rest of the world) is ok str...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

For casual readers who have not slavishly followed the debate on the presentation of the standings it is the top 28 that go through as you would expect but this is number 27 on the listing due to a doubling of two players on exactly the same score - this is why top 27 is referred to. @osric - at lea...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Discussion (finished games only)

I would have stabbed on principle. Also, solo wins will be used as tiebreakers. My general principle would be that I stab if it will help achieve my best possible outcome in a game. I thought the tiebreaker element as low enough chance that I am equal 7th with someone going into the top board as to...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Discussion (finished games only)

Couple of further things to explore. Firstly I had five player replacements across my two games was that an outlier or did others experience similar? Durga did a great job managing it but it wasn't a challenge I was expecting. Secondly on the above, how about a quick straw poll as to what others wou...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Discussion (finished games only)

I just want to say that... http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=237254 ....I can't believe I sort of actually know these two jokers and saw this result. Made my day. I really enjoyed seeing this Brumark and Sweetwater. Very funny. You'd never see me do this, but still I enjoyed it. Says a lot a...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Discussion (finished games only)

I thought about it but its a rather complex calculation and there are just better things to do in life. If anyone calculates it correctly I will be mightily impressed I did some quick calculations - so not exactly "correct". But, I did find that above 80 as of the last update guarantees a spot in t...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

The bit I would add to Swordsmans comments it that generally the situation is not a choice between a solo and and an even distribution of points (yes absolutely in some games) but generally it is in the situation asymmetry with a grand alliance facing a board leader in which case one player may alre...
