Re: A new RPG idea
Qlik Quicklï is a nominal human, also nominally several thousand years old, and has no knowledge of this region's language. He lived a fairly normal life as an alchemist's assistant until the alchemist accidentally cut him loose from the world's timeline and doomed him to skip through time like a ve...

Bot Diplomacy Challenge
I had an idea for an informal "tournament" involving bot games the other day and wondered if anyone would be interested. Here's how it would work: 1. Every contestant plays a series of seven gunboat (no-press) bot games, at least one as every power on the classic map. 2. All bot games that a contest...

Re: Worst starting country
In terms of pure stats (https://diplom.org/Zine/F2006M/Burton/DP_F2006M_best_powers.htm): Italy and Austria are the hardest to play overall. Russia is very hard to play in gunboat (having to defend against 4 different countries on both sides of the stalemate line), but in a press game this is offset...

Re: What is Morality?
Continuing from above to answer certain other questions about how to decide whose morality to side with, I encourage you to take the side that benefits the overwhelming majority of human beings. Racial and ethnic genocide is categorically wrong, because the consequences of believing otherwise would...

1846 is the 70th smallest divisor of 25^10-1, or the (2+5)*10^1 th. It is one of only three numbers that are also one of the most recent 250 years that fits this criterion, the others being 1804 and 1968.

Re: What is Morality?
Possibly an interesting side question. What is something you like about someone in this thread that disagrees with you? Not a popularity contest thing, but an earnest reminder that we're all just nerds playing a video game after all and would probably sooner have a beer together than an argument. F...

Re: What is Morality?
I will posit the idea that there are moral absolutes. These absolutes do not limit our choices because we have free will, and we can do what we want. But we can apply a fairly simple standard to know if what we do is moral. ... Those are biggies and obvious examples of immoral behavior – actions th...

Re: What is Morality?
Religion can come later and give it more structured form, but [morality] is something that comes from within and can be moulded by society and experience before becoming hard-wired. Okay, I think I generally agree with what you're saying here, except for one point: what is "within"? That implies th...

Re: What is Morality?
Okay, so where is your objective morality coming from, if you're so sure there is such a thing? It comes from God and his commandments (and I'd like to go on record as saying that I have no political aspirations in that ;-) ) By common definition, God is perfect, omniscient, relatively omnipotent c...

Re: What is Morality?
For me a perfect being is equal to a perfect action. Since both are a product of the other, I would argue that there is no difference between the two.

Put 3 Pinecones who worship 3 different Gods with antithetical sets of Will's and Laws inm power as supreme leaders of theocratic neighbouring nation states, give them armed fanatical adherents and within 20 minutes a three way war will erupt. Yes, putting your theoretical 3 Pinecones in charge wou...

Re: What is Morality?
I'm not drawing those distinctions, no. After all, what is a perfect being? If a perfect being is made of matter, then it is a perfect action, since matter itself is energy. If a perfect being's being-ness is defined by consciousness, then it is the thoughts of the being that make it conscious, and ...

Re: What is Morality?
I still find the relativists don't have a great argument here. Chattel slavery was wrong, even if we can't agree to the precise moral reasoning that proves it as such. Is your contention that it actually was "good" just because some white people thought it was? The wrongness of slavery has somethin...

Re: What is Morality?
I think Frtiz' point about the Bible, and mine about the Golden Rule, is that human reasoning about an objective moral code that we believe to be true is better than the alternative - totally unconstrained "whatever I feel like today" style morality, which I would hesitate to even call morality. I'...
