Re: Christmas Drawing Give-away

Happy Xmas and congrats to all the winners! Looking forward to shipping out some board games and mugs, I have to say the sample mug I got myself came out pretty well; definitely will be happy to have it on my desk at work.

Re: any hope to have web site designer hide the Google Recaptcha badge?

Thanks for the heads up. We don't actually even use recaptcha anymore now that we have the custom map-based bot query, so I'll remove this.

Re: Announcements should only be posted by moderators

Thanks so much for all of the clarifications kestasjk! I was wrong about the existence of Discord-based games -- turns out the one thing I was looking had a Game Master who was manually adjudicating orders 0.0 I'm curious whether this webDip Discord is the official one: https://discord.gg/Q6PtSZc Y...

Re: Are Atheists inherently amoral?

I think religion works well for a lot of people and that's great. As long as you don't push your beliefs on others / judge others I think do what works for you.

No -ist is inherently immoral.

Re: Christmas Drawing Give-away

Sorry if I’m being blunt, but can I ask why? There is no incentive for you to do so (if I understand this right) and someone like me who hasn’t yet donated to the site could easily put in a name and take a prize. Or is it just for fun? Why not? I think it's just for fun. Call it the world I’m livin...

Re: Announcements should only be posted by moderators

This all raises super interesting questions about what WebDip should be and who it is for. I love the old-fashioned early 2000s feel of the forum. I find it extremely refreshing in 2023. It definitely isn't the sort of thing that grows a community all on its own. But it's something unique that keep...

Re: Announcements should only be posted by moderators

I'm an oddball on my generation, but as a high schooler I will note that I greatly prefer an on-site forum to discord or reddit. I don't think it needs much if any changing, but I do urge you not to remove any of it in favor of some "nuetral" social media platform. Yep I like having our own forum t...

Re: BlighterDalekBots~in World Variant games?

Unfortunately that's pretty unlikely to happen MM: We can tweak the parameters of the AI model, e.g. make them easier/harder, chattier/quieter, less/more rude, truthful/deceptive, etc, but we can't (without buying supercomputer time and a *lot* of effort) train new models that would know about a dif...

Re: Bot Talk

Apologies if this has been asked previously, but are the bots playing PPSC? You mean are they playing to win or are they optimizing for supply centers? I'm almost certain they're playing to win, but not 100% sure, I'll ask when I next get a chance Also, did someone once mention that y’all have bett...

Re: Announcements should only be posted by moderators

I guess it comes down to whether or not the purpose of the forum is to support WebDip gameplay and grow the community of Diplomacy players. I would argue that this forum is distracted/distracting from that purpose in a variety of ways. Personally, I prefer this platform and think it’s a shame that ...

Try adding &view=dropDown to the request, I think that should do it

Yes, the scoring on takeovers here really hurts rankings, but I play for fun and don't care about rank. I hate seeing games go bad, so I step in. I've played many games with those other two guys.
Appreciate it, and I'm hoping we'll be able to correct that before long (hopefully retroactively)

Re: Civil Disorder Take-overs

Glad to see people seem generally in favour of this.. Always hard to know whether the forum reflects what the majority of players think, I suspect if I made the change I'd get at least some people up in arms, but it's feeling at least plausible. Tbh- I personally enjoy the points system. I think usi...

Re: Forum still plagued by advertising bots

Damn .. just noticed another spammer. Whoever it is was hiding links to some crappy game website for kids so that it couldn't be seen in their post. Based on the messages and timing it's definitely a person, probably someone affiliated closely with the site. I guess it doesn't matter that the forum ...

Re: Does this website violate copyright laws?

Yeah it's kind of a strange law.. I feel like the music/film/tv industry get crazy strong copyright protections, but board game creators probably don't have as much lobbying power. I think because a rulebook describes a method you can't copyright / patent a method or some such. The classic example i...

Re: Civil Service Medals

I guess the only way you might be able to tell is if the orders were clearly not in the bot's interest / not optimal for itself / would encourage you do to something that might benefit it. Then you might realise that it's not generating text based on a logical order but on a pseudo-order. (But that...

Re: Civil Disorder Take-overs

The only important difference between the two is that with GR the rating you stand to lose in a game (the "bet", in points terms) is relative to your current rating (multiplied by a factor based on the game type / press type), instead of a set amount that's set when the game is created and is the s...

Re: Forum still plagued by advertising bots

Site visibility is way more important than stopping occasional spam posts on the forum IMO. What good is a spam-free WebDip with a dwindling player base? This is just for the forum. The analytics don't point to a lot of new users arriving via the forum, but I'll keep an eye on it. The stats are fin...

Re: Civil Service Medals

I'd love to see whether the bot could do better in some circumstances by indulging the lies it crafts with its pseudo moves. Maybe the bots are unconvincing liars, so the default to selectively-volunteered truth is better for them? I actually have the opposite intuition - in my experience a well-tu...
