Re: Tyr sea and Gol
Keep in mind that these variants were not invented for webDiplomacy. The original variant author intended those adjacencies, as archived here: https://diplomacyzines.co.uk/?page_id=6115 https://diplomacyzines.co.uk/?page_id=5573 So webDiplomacy just respects the original game design. This is a bit ...

Re: Extending game times
I get it, but last time the problem was I didn't add enough time. The worry is that someone had orders to enter but it's late or they have other obligations, so they miss that 3 hour window to enter their orders and the next three hours they can't access the server, so they can't submit turns out o...

Re: Mist Covered Mountains
This is the only game I’ve ever spectated, that it ended in a solo and for England no less was great to see. The 1901 builds between France and Germany seemed to be a pretty good prisoners dilemma: unfortunately, both chose to defect (army, army) and as a result England had a clear-ish path thereaft...

Re: Ghost Ratings query
It is the player who takes over whose GR is used to calculate the changes at the end of the game, and the player who drops avoids the hit (or increase - but let’s be real, the vast majority of drops happen in bad positions) to GR. It is unfair as it artificially inflates some folks’ GR and deflates ...

Re: Processing problem
@jamiet The idea is that if the site experiences downtime time will be added to compensate for the down time, but in this case I thought processing had paused but the site had been up the whole time. If the site hasn't been processing for two days but people can enter orders surely no-one would wan...

Re: Processing problem
Is there a rule as to when extra time is added during a processing failure and when it is not? The message we get during delays says extra time will be added (if I recall correctly, the amount of time is almost always reset to the time that was left when the processing error first hit), but this tim...

Re: Diplodocus - The AI That Conquered Gunboat Diplomacy
Very interesting. Didn't know until this vid and some further digging that yolo5 (a user that I ran into multiple times last summer, in non-tournament games) was the bot. Wish those games were unranked like the tournament ones were... We were asked to keep certain bot accounts under wraps to ensure...

Re: Moderate scoring systems
I am not sure how much the proposed scoring system will really help create incentives for 1- or 2- center countries to care; in the lowest pot game (35) the score of a 1-center country would be 1 in SOS and 1 in per-center scoring. As the pot gets bigger, the lower center countries would start to se...

Re: User relationship management
I tried to report us in a relationship again, but got another error. Happy to work off message board if it would be better. That said, I suspect most metagamers won't be too concerned with voluntarily reporting themselves, and the bigger item will be collecting data on others' reports...

Re: User relationship management
I think this is a decent idea, but there may be some bugs in the implementation. First, I tried to test reporting a relationship with you, with the intent of withdrawing it after report, but I couldn't do that. It errored out once I tried to report. So not sure that part if working yet. Second, repo...

Re: Dealing with the Metagame
< Are ghost ratings an alternative to these scoring systems, or is that more of an Elo thing that isn't compatible with our points system? I have no idea. But you know what could be great, having the option to set a minimum ghost rating to join a game. Not sure how easy to implement that would be t...

Re: Dealing with the Metagame
Almost every game has felt very similar to me lately- Two/Three countries that are weak go out early, one country gets an early lead, everyone looks out for the stalemate and decides to play for the draw, one/two other players are maybe eliminated, and then it draws. At no point is there ever a rea...

Re: What's the deal with Austria?
I'm sure this question has been asked a million times since the games inception, but how the hell do you play Austria? 1. It's in a geographically awkward region, being a direct roadblock to Turkish expansion. Russia would have to awkwardly pivot around. Italy would have an easier time attacking Au...

Re: No mod response
There are not any active mods currently, volunteering is unfortunately down significantly these days. I have addressed that game though. Oh goodness, I didn't know that. Maybe I should look into what that role is to see if I can help! +1 I don't know what the requirements are (and I doubt I fill th...

Re: Can we fix the phase countdown timer?
The timer you see on the website matches the local computer time, but the server processes on actual time. So if the clock on your computer is slow or fast, the website clock will be misaligned with the actual clock. Phones don’t drift like computers do, so they shouldn’t ever be out of sync with th...

Re: The Carebear Conundrum
The reason for the intolerance (or at least, not wanting to play in games with carebears) is that your way of playing the game makes our way of playing substantially less fun. Perhaps that is because it is harder for you win with carebears on the map. I know you are a kick ass player, Teccles, one ...

Re: The Carebear Conundrum
It would never happen since the point/GR system is the driver of rotten games like this: https://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=312478 the only way to get rid these types of games is to get rid of the reward for them. But that would require probably individualized mod intervention that opens up ...
