Congratulations Spartaculous! We’d better start memorizing the list of famous Guianians, it seems.

General NEIL RITCHIE is correct! Born in British Guiana in 1897, he was Monty’s predecessor as head of Eighth Army, having held only divisional command hitherto. He was soundly defeated by Rommel at Gazala, and was busted back to a division on home duties. He later became one of Monty’s best corps commanders in Northwest Europe. Postwar he led British forces in the Malaya Emergency. He retired to Canada where he died in 1983. His career is a lesson in military leadership, and the need to ensure proper experience before being appointed to high command.

Congratulations Spartculous! (seems I say that a lot). Over to you.
Good pick! Next one up soon.

Good choice. This is one of those ones where I knew there had to be only one person who fit the criteria, but I couldn't figure out who.

I've reorganized the summary to better reflect what you know and don't know.

1. Real dead male human.
2,3,13,14a. Born 1886-1907.
8,9,10,12,15,17. Born in Western hemisphere; but not North America or Europe.
5. Died 1976-2024.
4. First language English.
6,7,11,14b,16,18. Primarily famous as WW2 General or Lieutenant General. May still have some fame for government (but if so not British govt), nobility/royalty (but if so, not British royalty/aristocracy), STEM, or business, but these have not been excluded yet.

I said you have lots of clues, but on reflection still lots of unknowns, considering there have been 18 questions. Still don't know what citizenship this person had, what army he fought for, or what WW 2 campaigns he was involved in.

Also part of Oceania is in the Western Hemisphere.
Some of it is. The 180 meridian cuts pretty much down the middle of it.

Was this person most know for their involvement in world war 2?
Yes.
There is a chance that the QM interpreted "North America" to exclude Central America and the Caribbean, but I really hope not because those places are definitely part of North America.
There is no chance of this.

Two questions left.

1. Real dead male human.
2,3,13,14a. Born 1886-1907.
8,10,12,15,17. Born in Western hemisphere; but not US, Canada, Europe.
9. Not born 1940 or earlier in Europe or North America.
5. Died 1976-2024.
4. First language English.
6,7,11,14b,18. Primarily famous for military involvement in WW2. May still have some fame for government (but if so not British govt), nobility/royalty (but if so, not British royalty/aristocracy), STEM, or business, but these have not been excluded yet.
16. Highest military rank equivalent to NATO General or Lieutenant General.

Does this man's highest military rank correspond with NATO rank codes OF-8 or OF-9? For the British Army, these would be General (4-Star) and Lieutenant General (3-Star).
Yes.

How do I phrase this...
Were they born on the west side of the prime meridian?
ie, the US would be on the west side and China would be on the east side
Western Hemisphere (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Hemisphere)
Yes, that.
Scratch my previous question. Was this person born in the western hemisphere?

I'm with Hominid that this is probably a WW2 officer from a British colony, but we only have five more questions to narrow this down.
Welcome back to the game!
And thanks! I can't tell you how happy I was to see an active game of this still running when I got back on the site.
