I almost guessed Sun Wukong earlier when I guessed Chee-chee (I googled "fictional primates" and he is on the very short list) but it turns out I read the chart at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primate
wrong and thought Monkeys were Hominids. Good pick KotP and good sleuthing Sparty!

Pikachu is a rodent, specifically a mouse.
Source? Acc to Wikipedia, Pikachu is a "fictional species." And it attacks by shooting lightning, an ability I've been unable to find in any extant rodent species.
True, but the original Pokémon trading cards are still extant, and it's printed right on them.

I will guess Sun Wukong.
And we have a winner! I am surprised it took this long. In my eyes, Sun Wu Kong is not particularly obscure by any stretch of the imagination.
Thanks for the fun game! I was kind of thinking that this would be a monkey from long-ago Asian literature... I had also thought about Hanuman from Hinduism and the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" monkeys.

Next round will be up at some point later on today.

I almost said Staurt Little early on, but remembered that he was never actually a mouse until the 1999 film released. Rather, he was just a tiny, tiny man

I've kind of given up on this myself, but I'll share some of my findings in case it inspires somewhere else.

I considered but rejected three possibilities:

Nkima (Tarzan). Tarzan is not really fantasy.

Ozymandias (His Dark Materials). Unnamed in the book, but given this name in the radio show. But this is not a character on its own but rather spirit of a human character.

Shift (Chronicles of Narnia). Stated to be an ape, but of unstated species. Illustrated in the book as chimp. This would have earned at least a "pass", if not a yes, on the "hominidae" question.

Other than that, I think I'm tapped out.

Is this character male?
This will be Q 20. Does anyone wish to make further guesses?
Revised free guess: Chee-chee, the Francois' Langur from the 50's comic _Tor_.
No, not chee-chee

Free Guess: Gorilla Grodd?
Not a gorilla
Clarification question: Are "apes" considered "gorillas"?
Gorillas are a subset of ape. Additionally, gorillas are part of family Hominidae.

Free guess: Bandar-Log, from the Jungle Book, who were apparently grey langur monkeys.

If not, was this character's first appearance in a 19th century novel by an English writer?
Not Bandar, and first appearance was not in a 19 th century novel by an English writer.
