I almost ruled Trollope out as he was a political figure. He ran for the Liberals but was never elected. So certainly not a "political leader" and the question was correctly answered, but it did cause me pause.
Yes, I saw that but I thought mentioning it in some way would be too big a hint so I simply answered in accordance with the rules.

Free guess: Lewis Carroll.
Fun fact: you could actually make a case for Carroll [Charles Dodgson] as a "prominent scientific figure", depending on your definition. He was a mathematician who developed an original method for computing determinants of matrices; the method of Dodgson condensation is still used to this day for certain theoretical computations.

(Apocryphal story: Queen Victoria wrote to Carroll saying that she loved Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and would be happy to read anything else that he had written. Carroll sent him a copy of the math textbook he wrote.)

The game was up with the list. I was quite surprised Trollope had so many on the list.
When I posted it I hadn't realized how much of the list was the same authors over and over again.

Well unless either Damo or Wikipedia made a mistake, this game will be over soon.

And I'll use a counted guess and go with Thomas Love Peacock.

Those two were on my list. Since the guess rush is now on, I'll go with Wilkie Collins.

I'm in a tough spot. I've narrowed it down to 4, but having asked the last question I can't ask a final narrowing-down question and then make a guess.

There are quite a lot of people this could be.

Did they write any of the works on this list?

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4603.Best_Nineteenth_Century_British_and_Irish_Novels
Yes
CLARIFICATION REQUEST: The hyperlink went to an URL for a page listing 99 titles. But the list continued onto another page going up to 139. Was the answer that the person was on the linked URL (ie the first 99), or on the entire list (the 139)?
I considered the entire list
