Free guess: Vitruvius?
Damn, why was it so simple???

Vitruvius it is.
Given the information, particularly your response to the question of whether he was dead, and my gut told me famous architect who contributed to the military as well.

Vitruvius was the only person to come to mind (:

Best known for being a writer or philosopher?
In fact, yes, 'rediscovered' through his multi-volume De architectura. My wife did her PhD in Renaissance architecture.

Funny, I don't *think* (it was late) the list of Writers and Philosophers I was looking at last night had Vitruvius on it... I was going to go for Ovid or one of the Plinys.

Nice work, S&C.
Wikipedia doesn't call him a philosopher, but I think it's pretty fair to call De Architectura a philosophical work.

So far, we've asked 7 questions, and we now know:

1. White Real Man
2. Dead before 31 Dec. 1599
3. Not British.
A free clue! He was already dead by New Year's Eve, 1600. Now we know that it isn't Rumold Mercator, who was at the top of my shortlist.
To be explicit - it isn't Rumold Mercator.
