Not sure III is right. If the condition is not fulfilled then surely thee is no subsequent question.
I'm not sure what you mean
It's ok, I understand now. Simply put, conditional guesses are allowed, conditional questions are not. I hadn't realised the latter and also don't really see why.

You're the question master. You have the privilege of running the show however you deem fit :-)
Yeah, but consensus and buy-in is a bonus :)

Woo!

Before I start the next thread, I am proposing some edits to the rules. In my previous game, there was a valid point (that I overruled) about the rules stating that a question that doesn't have a binary answer shouldn't be counted. I think the point is that rule was supposed to be that a question that doesn't get answered shouldn't be counted, but it kind of ended up in this weird place where question masters trying to do the right thing by giving more than a yes/no answer to keep the game interesting had to give up free questions.

If people hate these changes, I will just keep the original rules (but will continue to exercise QM's prerogative to not give up free info!). I'll give it a few hours for people to weigh in and then put up the next thread.

:!: Ⅰ The point of the game is for players to ask 20 binary (yes/no) questions in order to guess the person or character the question master has selected. Only binary questions are valid. Added context for the spirit of the game.

:!: Ⅱ If a binary question does not have a yes-or-no answer, or the question master decides that the answer relies too much on a subjective interpretation or that the technically accurate answer might be unfairly misleading, or there's some other extenuating circumstance, the question master may decline to answer the question (in which case the question does not count against the total), ask that it be rephrased (which only counts if the player resubmits it), or answer it with additional context or hints (in which case it does count). The question master may provide additional hints outside of responses to questions whenever they like, but free info they choose to give out does not count against the question total. This is more realistically how we play.

:!: Ⅲ Players may not make a question conditional on the outcome of a pending question. E.g., if one player asks "Is the person over 50?" and another player asks "If yes, do they wear glasses?" before the question master answers the first question, then the question master must answer the second question even if the answer to the first is no. Players may make guesses conditional on the outcome of a question, though. This was just a rewrite for clarity because I couldn't quite parse the original.

Ⅳ One guess per person does not count against the total twenty questions, but additional guesses by the same person do.

:!: Ⅴ After twenty questions are answered, there are no more free guesses, and five more guesses are allowed. I think it makes more sense to let people guess after the 20th question is asked but before it's answered.

:!: Ⅵ No player shall ask more than two consecutive questions before another player has asked a question or made a guess. If a player has already used their free guess, or if the game is in the final round of 5 guesses after the 20th question, guesses that would use a question/guess slot count for this rule.

:!: Ⅶ Before the twentieth question is answered, players who have not yet used their free guess may choose to expend their free guess alongside two consecutive questions.

Ⅷ The question master may choose entities real or fictional that are not horribly obscure, so long as they are not repeats.

Ⅸ Whoever guesses correctly takes over from the previous question master; if they do not want to do it, they may choose who to pass the duty onto or just give it to the first volunteer.

Ⅹ If the question master remains undefeated three times in a row, on the third time they must either pass it to a person of their choice, or the first volunteer takes over.

The original rules, for reference:

:oldforum: Ten Commandments :oldforum:

Ⅰ Only binary questions may be asked.

Ⅱ If a binary question does not have a yes-or-no answer, the question master must not count the question.

Ⅲ All other binary questions will be answered and count towards a twenty-question limit, regardless of whether they were designated as 'conditional'.

Ⅳ One guess per person does not count against the total twenty questions, but additional guesses by the same person do.

Ⅴ After all twenty questions are used up, there are no more free guesses, and five total guesses are allowed.

Ⅵ No player shall ask more than two consecutive questions or make more than two consecutive guesses (or a consecutive combination thereof) before another player has asked a question or made a guess.

Ⅶ Before the twentieth question is asked, players who have not yet used their free guess may choose to expend their free guess alongside two consecutive questions.

If yes I suggest Corte Real, if no Lavrador.

You're welcome.
No
It was a suggestion to the other players rather than a question but the point is moot.

DougJoe, Foxcastle, damo666, han-shahanshah, Jamiet99uk and Octavious had already used their free guesses. Since damo666 guessed again, you are now out of questions. Five guesses left!
