No charity hints at the finish line, eh? Guess we're going to have to crack this the hard way.
I think that you all can crack this the hard way! I'd give a hint if you all were still way off.
My hint, if you weren't close, would have been that this was my favorite childhood movie, but that it was way too inappropriate for it to have been my favorite childhood movie, ha ha

I wonder what esoteric community we need to nominate so that it can pass the dart test...
You need to watch the movie! It has definitely stood the test of time.

And yes, this is one of Gene Wilder's most famous roles. It's not as famous as his Willy Wonka role, which was referenced in this thread, but it's up there.

Oh, this character is totally gonna pass that if like, it's just anyone over the age of 30 I would say? This movie is very well known, and I think it was a great choice for a tricky one that would be hard to guess despite being a big character

My free guess:

Gene Wilder's Jim the alcoholic gunslinger from Blazin Saddles
The Waco Kid
Yes!!!

I couldn't remember whether Jim the Waco Kid was ever deputized by Sheriff Bart. He ends up basically playing the part of Sheriff Bart's deputy.

I've had the theme song of Blazing Saddles stuck in my head this whole time, ha ha.

More 1972 just in case Damo's guess isn't it:

The Thing with Two Heads: There are references to Halloween in this movie.

Up the Chastity Belt: Part of a series.

Up the Front: Part of the same series as the one above.

What's Up, Doc?: Possible: This film includes a character called Mr Jones who is implied to be an FBI agent. But this would be a very obscure character to pick for this game.

Where Does it Hurt?: Contemporary setting so no reason the characters wouldn't celebrate halloween.

With Children at the Seaside: Extremely obscure unless you're a fan of Bulgarian cinema.

Working through (and ruling out) more of the 1972 films:

Fritz the Cat: No - animated, central male character is not human.

The Heartbreak Kid: There is no ambiguity about whether the main male character is involved in law enforcement. There is no reason to assume the characters would not celebrate halloween.

Now You See Him, Now You Don't: Part of a series.

On the Buses: Part of a series.

Pink Flamingos: Part of a series.

Play It Again, Sam: There is no ambiguity about whether the main male character is involved in law enforcement. There is no reason to assume the characters would not celebrate halloween.

Pulp: There is no ambiguity about whether the main male character is involved in law enforcement. There is no reason to assume the characters would not celebrate halloween.

Snowball Express: There is no ambiguity about whether the main male character is involved in law enforcement. There is no reason to assume the characters would not celebrate halloween.

Another nice mess - cartoon
Avanti! - male lead Jack Lemon who won an Oscar.
Bless this house - British
Everything you always wanted..... - short stories, not really a male lead.

I have checked all the films on that list from 1970 and I can rule them all out, as follows:

Kelly's Heroes: No reason to believe the good guys would not have celebrated Halloween.

The Boatniks: Very obscure film, unlikely to hold the answer.

Catch-22: NO – based on a book.

The Cheyenne Social Club: Very obscure film, unlikely to hold the answer.

The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes: Actually released in 1969 and included on the Wikipedia list in error.

Doctor in Trouble: NO – film is part of a series.

Hi, Mom: NO – Robert De Nero won an Academy Award.

Hoffman: Very obscure film and not really a comedy.

M*A*S*H: NO – based on a book.

Myra Breckinridge: The main “good guy” is actually a woman, and there is no reason to believe they would not have celebrated Halloween.

The Out-of-Towners: NO – Jack Lemmon won more than one Academy Award.

The Owl and the Pussycat: There is literally a Halloween scene in this movie, so that rules it out.

There’s a Girl in my Soup!: The main male character is a TV chef. There is no possible ambiguity about whether he has anything to do with law enforcement.

The Twelve Chairs: NO – based on a book.

Start the Revolution Without Me: NO – based on two books, of which it is a parody.

There Was a Crooked Man: This has two co-lead actors. Of these, Henry Fonda won an Academy Award and, while Kirk Douglas did not, his role in the film is a robber and later an escaped convict – not any kind of law enforcement figure, but the opposite.

Which Way To The Front?: No reason to believe the good guys would not have celebrated Halloween. Also this film is TERRIBLE and why would you ever pick this rubbish?

Little Big Man: NO – Dustin Hoffman won more than one Academy Award.

So that rules out a film from 1970.

Someone else do 1972?

I think the funnest clues are that this was a real world person in an American film who would have never ever celebrated Halloween and wasn't in law enforcement but that needed to be double checked due to some level of ambiguity.

There's certainly something to be deduced there (by somebody more knowledgable of 19070's films then I am).
What kind of role / job / person would cause the questionmaster to have to think: "possibly law enforcement but I'll have to check...... ok nope"...?

A security guard at a parking garage?

A public toilet attendant?

Someone dressed up as a policeman at a fancy dress party?
