Your hint about him being somewhat involved in politics did help though. I was aware he had designed the Volkswagen Beetle on a contract from Hitler, so a scientist without a degree with government involvement led me to him.

Right! Yes, lots of ambiguity there I can see. Also he died in January 1951, so 1950 was cutting it close too.

Hmmm, I was tempted to say Ferdinand Porsche, but I looked him up and he was actually Austrian. Definitely not more than 20M population.
I think we can agree to accept this as the correct answer!

Ferdinand Porsche!

Your question was 'From a country with a population greater than 20M?'. You didn't specify what timeframe you were referring to, so I took it literally as the country he was born in. He was born in 1875, and that means that his Czech birth town was a part of Austria-Hungary, which at that time hosted more than 20 million citizens.

On many occasions, some seemingly straightforward questions cannot be answered yes/no. The same applies to his involvement in politics. Not strictly a politician, but involved in the Nazi heavy industry, and state-subsidised industry and politics are inseparably intertwined.

Was he best known as a business leader like a CEO or similar?
Hmmm, how else can you be involved in politics without being a politician?
I think someone like George Soros would qualify this way, but he's still alive.
I wouldn't say 'best known' for this, but yes, he was a CEO or similar.

As for the person in question, he was dedicated to other domains of activity, for which he's known, and his involvement in politics was rather of pragmatic nature at the level of a civilian consultant. He was a member of a political party, though, again, for practical reasons.
In that case I will ask: Scientist?
Yes, but without a scientific diploma.

Royalty?
no

Not a new questions but clarification of your hint: I would consider all members of government or parliament politicians in the strict sense. Correct?
I would consider 'politician' as a term describing a person whose professional activity concentrates on politics, that is governing, policy making, and execution.

As for the person in question, he was dedicated to other domains of activity, for which he's known, and his involvement in politics was rather of pragmatic nature at the level of a civilian consultant. He was a member of a political party, though, again, for practical reasons.

Fellow guessers: How should we proceed with this?
We could try to narrow down his country of origin. Right now it can be Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ukraine and Poland.
We could try to narrow down the date of his death.
We could try to get more information about his profession. Does anyone have a suggestion regarding persons who are involved in politics, but not strictly politicians.

Yes

Hint: however, not primarily known for his involvement in politics; not a politician in a strict sense.
Royalty?
no
