John Winthrop
Scratch and replace with:

John Harvard

(If it is John Winthrop though, don't count this as correct.)
John Harvard of… uh… Harvard fame is correct!

Well we don't know that this person wasn't an explorer, just that they weren't primarily known as an explorer. There are several people this could be, but I'll go with:

Roger Williams
If no, was this person a woman?
Not Roger Williams

And not a woman

I’m not trying to be super tricky here, but I can’t think of a clue that doesn’t just give it away and I don’t have time or time to figure one out. So we can say the new limit is 22 questions, and to be fair to Mimi who guessed before I said the game might be extended, everyone can have one free guess before question 22 is answered. To be fair to Jaimie I will reset his “counter” to zero in terms of the two-consecutive-question rule.

TLDR - it’s now 22 questions and everyone has a free guess.

It occurs to me that we don't know if this person was a man or a woman.

Given the date range, it must be someone associated in some way with the very early British colonies in North America. However it can't be someone like John Smith because he was an explorer. Hmm.

I think I'll re-ask Mimi's question.

Is this person primarily known for doing something in North America?
Yes

This is 19 I believe - if things don’t seem on the right track by the time 20 is answered I will either offer a clue or just open it up for additional questions, but every time I say this someone immediately chimes in with the right answer so maybe it won’t be necessary.
