I propose we formally add to the rules that we disallow questions based on race or colour (we tend to do this in practice already).

Obviously questions based on nationality and place of birth are fine.
Is this a hard and fast rule though? I thought it was QM preference. I personally wouldn't mind answering a question if it focused more on specific ethnicity than race (like how often when we have ancient subjects someone might ask if the person was considered Greek). And if the person's wiki article describes them that way (i.e. Kendrick Lamar's parents are described as African-Americans in his Early Life section).

To use the recent example (no shade to the person who asked it) I do understand how the question "Caucasian" merits a pass as general race categories are not a clearly defined thing and the only people I could confidently say Yes to would be people from the actual Caucasus.
Yes it is not a hard and fast rule which is why I'm putting it forward as a proposal.

I think questions like "is this person described as being of xyz heritage on their wikipedia page?" is fine.

I think a question like "would this person consider themselves to be xyz?" is arguably acceptable.

I think a formal rule would probably be helpful, particularly to new players. However I find it difficult to come up with a properly worded rule. Any lawyer types want to give it a try?

If you're going to be updating the demographics then you should probably stick to DarthPorg36's methodology (which as Spartaculous suggested prioritizes fictional characters' in-universe origin, e. g. Paddington Bear is Peruvian and Taz is Tasmanian). Or else review the whole gigantic list yourself if you find that ridiculous and want to switch to a different methodology . . .
what i meant is that on skim I couldn't find anything referring to in-universe that said taz was from tasmania

on double check i found something that said he used to live on tasmania, but I couldn't verify it so i'm not counting it. ofc i'm just skimming so i'm likely missing something obvious. if you know that taz is from tasmania or can find a source that says so feel free to change it but i couldn't find anything aside from the fact he's a tasmanian devil which is native to australia, so i put where looney tunes generally likely takes place
The relevant source is:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasmanian_Devil_(Looney_Tunes),

...which lists Taz's "Species" as "Tasmanian Devil" which links to:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasmanian_devil

...which says:

The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii; palawa kani: purinina)is a carnivorous marsupial of the family Dasyuridae. It was formerly present across mainland Australia, but became extinct there around 3,500 years ago; it is now confined to the island of Tasmania.
yeah that's fair. there's nothing specifically about taz being australian but yeah i guess it's relatively obvious they're supposed to be. i'll change it

but also for future reference if i fill in something in the demographics that anyone disagrees with while catching up (since it's not too commonly updated) please just change it

Shouldn't Taz be considered to be from Tasmania?

I think United Kingdom since she's an Anglo-Saxon goddess. She is presumably from Proto-West Germanic because there is a German equivalent, and there is a philosophical debate that can be had over whether that's the same person, but still the first mention is from Bede.
