Ruy Lopez! Great pick and great guess. Also one of two chess openings that I actually remember how to do

Ruy López de Segura
Ruy López de Segura is correct!
Hooray! I really like chess. As white, I prefer to play the Exchange Ruy in the style of Fischer (with 5. 0-0). One of these days, I will learn the Schliemann as black.

For what it's worth, I moved over the summer, and now I live in the same neighborhood as a famous grandmaster you've probably heard of. I haven't met him or anything, but I have seen him walking by my house.

Boo. I thought we were going to have a lutenist right after a luthier. :-D
I retract my previous booing of the QM. :-)

Since it doesn’t seem like this will be gotten without a clue, I’ll try to narrow it down a little more and get to the clue threshold: primarily famous for something to do with writing?
Yes

Probably not a politician since none of these fit:

By the way, we know that this person was not born in Ceuta, Melilla or the Canary Islands.

Worth remembering that this person probably has some fame in something related to music or invention even if not “primary.”
Or they are primarily known for inventing something, but that something is not usually thought of as an invention. See my previous post, for example.

The anonymous author of Lazarillo de Tormes fits so neatly except for the certainty of a post-1515 birth
