Moby Dick?
Moby Dick, the antagonist of Moby-Dick, is correct!

I just finished reading it for the first time so I couldn't resist--obviously there are multiple characters I could have chosen but I thought the whale would be the most fun. Technically it was first published in London, hence the pass, and I actually checked to make sure that the publisher was based west of Greenwich.
Hey, I just met you
And there's a white whale
So let's go sailing
Call me Ishmael
I know approximately one 19th century fictional literary animal and happened to get it correct ;)

Good pick, great book, and the next round will be up in the morning

Is this a character a type of animal that exists in the real world? (Eg a dog, a horse, a bird, etc., but not a unicorn or sasquatch or alien)
Yes.

^ for the new folks, since we know the character was introduced after 1800, the pass means it is uncertain if it was introduced in the US or not (also worth noting the US didn’t have the same borders throughout this time period)

8. From a fictional universe which follows the same general laws of physics and nature as the real world, as opposed to a fictional universe where, for example, magic and/or the supernatural and/or superpowers etc. exist
5,6. Has been portrayed on live-action film, TV, or theatre, but not introduced on live-action film, TV, or theatre
9. Has appeared animated in a mainstream show or movie (but is not primarily known for this)
7. Not developed through popular tradition, folklore, or popular stories

Was the media that first introduced this character originally published in English?
I think this is functionally the same as DreamTrawler's question above (to which the answer was "yes") so I won't count it.
Thanks! Apparently reading isn't my strong suit.

Wait -- is a previous correct answer allowed to be re-introduced? I don't see any rule about that.
No it isn't (I believe "so long as they are not repeats" is somewhere in the rules) so I won't count this guess.

Good guess though apart from that, and welcome to the game!
