Removing 7 since it's not relevant (born after independence) and confusingly phrased.

1,3,5. Real dead woman
2,6,7,8,9,10,11,16. Born between April 1831 and April 1841 (deducible using the contemporaneous questions)
1,4,5. Born in what is now the United States but not what is currently California, Ohio, New York, or Pennsylvania
12,14,15. Has notable written works, but not primarily known for them
13. Not married to anyone who was famous in their own right

Passed: Primarily famous for contributions to the arts?
I was thinking Pochahantus at the time
I guess that I meant to say 'no longer relevant'

I don't know, maybe it is correct. John Owen Dominis wasn't really famous "in his own right" per se.
I think this is borderline. Clearly from his Wikipedia entry, he was a well-known public figure in Hawaii before he married her; but today in 2024 he is really only still known about, because of the historical importance of his wife.

So I'm not going to argue with the QM on this point.

Excellent pick! Very outside the box given the line of questioning we were on. If Hawaii hadn't been on that map that JECE provided, I don't know if I would have gotten it.

I need to get some sleep before deciding the next being, so it won't be until morning Eastern US time.

Liliʻuokalani
Queen Liliʻuokalani is correct! Wow, it keeps bouncing from me to Hominidae.

The arts/writing angle is that she was a prolific songwriter, most famously writing Aloha ‘Oe, one of the most well-known Hawaiian songs.

Also, it slipped my mind but an African-American woman for Juneteenth would have been a good pick.

My guess is probably wrong because she was married to someone famous, but I'm keeping it up.

Also I just noticed the "white" part of JECE's question. I'm guessing this is not a white woman.

Juneteenth is tomorrow. I reckon that we seek to guess an African American woman.

Is she best known as the writer of either fiction or poetry?

If yes, is she best known as the writer of poetry?

If yes to both questions, free guess: Emily Dickinson.
No.
