Woo! An interesting choice, quite a controversial fellow too. I wasn't super familiar with him, but once it was clarified that it was possibly Japanese, I filtered for Japanese poets who had also acted, and who had very clearly expressed political views.

Mahmoud Darwish by any chance?
Unfortunately, no. I wouldn’t consider Mandatory Palestine a combatant state in WWII.

Sure why not. Free guess:

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa
Would be a good choice, but doesn’t fit the answers to 10, 11, or 18.

Free guess:

Yukio Mishima
And Jamie has got it! Yukio Mishima was the person you were looking for.

I'm bowing out. :eyeroll:
I lied. I'm stealing the last question with a winning guess.

Junichiro Tanizaki
Was he ever an actor?

Should we make the last question "did he die by suicide"? The answer is yes for both of the free guesses (respectively autodisembowelment and drug overdose) so if both guesses are wrong I think this would be a good question.
If either of those guesses is right, the final question is moot.

Agreed. Defo Japan. Not one of the big four haiku chaps as they were all born too early. So possibly someone like Kenji Miyazawa as he's inspired some of the better known anime... Or maybe Akutagawa... Or someone completely different

Whoever chooses the last question has to make it a good one

I'd like Mahmoud Darwish to be correct - he's a noteworthy figure and it would be an interesting choice by the question master.

I just don't think it can be.

To use a rather clumsy football analogy, saying that Mandatory Palestine lost the Second World War because of the horror the Israelis would unleash upon the Palestinian people afterwards, would be a little like saying Liverpool did not win the 1989 FA cup because of the horrific events at Hillsbrough Stadium during that year's semi-final. Yet despite those events, the pub quiz answer to the question "which team won the 1989 FA Cup?" is clearly "Liverpool".
I agree wholeheartedly that that is a rather clumsy football analogy. How long after posting did you regret using it?
When did you stop beating your wife?
Christmas a few years ago when she broke Monopoly and ended forever the Boxing Day board game tradition. Before then I won more often than not. Sad times

But the trouble is that we are left with Nippon, and the great haiku poets are too old, and my knowledge beyond that is painfully limited

I don't think it can be him. He was born in a part of Galilee which was under British administration during the Second World War. I think Britain won WW2.
I would argue that there are few places on earth that lost WWII more comprehensively than Palestine... but it does seem that your way of thinking is more in line with our question master's
It depends on your definition of "lost". The territory he was born in was counted as being on the "allied" side during the conflict. The fact that the Palestinian population of that territory suffered terribly in the aftermath of the war is absolutely true, but their territory was on the "winning" side.

Although if you're claiming it can only be one country, then you're clearly using a far narrower definition of losing WWII than I would... in which case it can't be
