12 Dec 20 UTC Good game folks! Way to resolve your differences so quickly, I/T. I must say I was hoping that your infighting would cause you to be a bit more tentative in your stop the solo efforts.

Are there any mistakes or places where I went wrong in pursuing the solo? The only thing I can think of is perhaps having prioritised defending Bel over taking Pie, so as to have had two builds that year? Even then, however, getting Rum, Sev, Spain, or Mar still seemed like a long shot.
12 Dec 20 UTC I can‘t speak for my predecessor but I had no beef with Italy ;)

GG everyone. I was happy to join for the last turns with not much work left to do.
12 Dec 20 UTC Good game y'all, wow was I out of my league!

I would comment if I knew how to help, but I'm a fairly new player with no solo wins. I'm honestly surprised I was able to barely hang on with the caliber everyone else to seems to be at.

What would you say was my critical error? I'm still learning the art of not wasting moves and any feedback will be a big help!
12 Dec 20 UTC Feel free to be critical, that is the best way to improve in my experience
12 Dec 20 UTC @Turkey lol I forgot Turkey CD'ed... Right at the crucial stop the solo year too D:
The new reliability system makes NMRs way less impactful than it used to be.
12 Dec 20 UTC @France: Up until 1904 I think you played as well as you could've. Being in a fight to the death with England with no help is not easy task. If I might point to one tactical error, however, it was getting your army stuck in Portugal. I realise why you first put it there and how difficult it is to get out, but that's what allowed England to hold Brest for so long, and for me to simply waltz into Paris. (For instance, S1904 it would've been much better to support Spain to MAO to get Port into the fight than Gas, since Gas was unlikely to have its support cut.)
Once I *did* simultaneously stab you and England, you two also needed to have worked out your differences to stop me from eating you both. That's far easier said than done, but the fact that you both were still feeling revanchist while I was walking into your centres really helped me solidify my position.
You were definetely in a tricky spot in the end, given that Italy could've easily taken Spain and possibly Portugal without any fear of causing a German solo, but Valis was gracious enough to let you survive.
12 Dec 20 UTC Why was it unlikely that the support would be cut in Gas in S1904? That was exactly what I was worried about, and decided to move gas instead. It did get the point where I realized I was toast and decided to work against you to stop the solo.

Overall I'm happy with my performance, I think it really stretched me to really think hard about all of the possible solutions. I can say I definitely got better from this game.

Thank you for the analysis. I did have one question though, why did you support me to Brest in A1905?
12 Dec 20 UTC I think I might actually regret that move lol. At the time, my thinking was that even if you took Brest, you wouldn't be able to use the build, but it would mean an English disband. Essentially, it would remove a piece from the board. Had I, say, supported it, however, then England would've had two units they could've still used to block my advance. Had I known England would go for Lvp rather than Edi, however, I probably would've supported them in Brest, so you'd have each gotten a disband. That may have given me a chance to get to Mar or Spain in time. But instead, it took me two more years to actually take Brest from you, and I didn't get any farther than that.

For S1904, I suppose you might have been worried about EngC S NAO-MAO, Bre-Gas, but also keep in mind that ultimately England's goal was going to be to hold onto Bre, and there were lots more ways they could lose it by moving it than not. That's why I would think it was unlikely.
But more so, I think that getting Gas into MAO was just a worse position for you, and that's why it was the wrong move. Let's say you had used Gas to support, and England had cut it. Without advance knowledge, in the fall you'd still have a 50/50 on getting MAO or getting Bre, which are not bad odds. But with the moves you chose, you still only had a 50/50 of getting MAO in the spring (less if you assumed EngC was going to remain in that fight), but getting in, you lost the chance at getting Brest in the fall.
This is hindsight 20/20, but had you ordered Gas S Spa-MAO, you would've guaranteed Brest, and gotten Por and Spa into play. As a result, you'd have been in a much better fighting position.

It was a fairly nitpicking tactical error, but the knock-on effects were quite large, imo. Anyway, I hope that made at least a little bit of sense.
13 Dec 20 UTC It made sense, thank you for breaking it down. That is a very good point how I prevented myself from getting Brest.
13 Dec 20 UTC Valis why were you so mean to me this game :(
13 Dec 20 UTC Yeah Valis, I must say I was incredibly impressed with how you handled the south. It was all so non standard and yet somehow all worked perfectly.
13 Dec 20 UTC GG all!

@Chaqa, sorry, this is an opening that I've been theorycrafting and testing lately. It's not fair/fun to Austria, but it's given me some decent results and it breaks up the AIvsRT monotony that was setting into my play.

@PF flattery will get you everywhere <3 ;) But it was a combination of Turkey being very communicative/receptive and your breakout-solo-threat that helped coalesce things.

@Arya Good job :) I think PF already went over most of the tactical and strategic mistakes. Don't forget that in all diplomacy, and especially gunboat, there is some arbitrariness and one can make no mistakes and still lose. So never feel too hard on yourself.

I kept France in as a reward for stopping the solo. This might sound obvious, but I've been rather annoyed at the amount of games in the current meta that thin the draw after successfully thinning the draw, and all that dose is lead to a culture where no one, rightfully, is willing to do so. Especially when no great amount of points nor pride are on the line, in my personal non-objective opinion, it should be rewarded.
13 Dec 20 UTC Normally I'd agree with you, except that I don't think France actually did anything to stop the solo. I would suggest that you could've probably eliminated France even had I continued aggressively attacking MAO. But I'm also quite happy with still having a living France!
