03 Jan 21 UTC Thanks for the game everyone. It was really interesting. I’ll have some EOG thoughts later.
03 Jan 21 UTC Yep. Seemed pretty clear for a long time how that was going to play out. Congrats
03 Jan 21 UTC Thanks. I was fairly sure that I'd be stopped short a 17. It wasn't until the end of 1910 when I thought I had a good shot at it.
04 Jan 21 UTC Good game England. What were all these pauses about?
04 Jan 21 UTC Lost power for a while during 2 consecutive storms. Then forgot to restart until the GM messaged me (got out of the habit of checking the website digging out and catching up with life...sorry about that).
16 Jan 21 UTC OK...some post mortem (sorry for the delay on this, but I do appreciate a good post mortem):

I was thrilled by Italy's opening to the west. I fully expected France to react strongly to Italy, and be weak. This meant that I was going to try and sneak in, because France was needed something to go right.

It also meant I needed to start a fight with Germany early, because France would be weak. I think that Germany needed to draw the same conclusions and NOT bounce Russia, so that he had an ally against me. Also, leaving Belgium untaken was probably an error. Munich isn't worth much early, but Belgium is. I think this is true in most games.

When Germany did bounce Russia, I assumed he was thinking we had a good E/G going (especially with me taking Brest), and that he'd continue with the standard advance. This meant that I'd succeed (for the last time in the game) at guessing a players moves and taking advantage for a strong attack.

After 1920, my ability to anticipate Germany and France's specific moves was pretty subpar, and hurt my speed of advance. I expected Russia to take Scandinavia. That was fine with me (I even wrote an article about it on BoredBrother's blog). But I kept outguessing myself in the advance in Germany. This was unfortunate.

Getting Portugal was the first time I thought I might be able to solo. Between that and Turkey antagonizing both Italy and Russia, I thought I'd be able to push through. I think the Turkey substitute did a good job fixing this, and made my job much harder.

The final advance east was a long term plan after attacking Germany. Bypassing Scandinavia which I could always take, but leaving Russia's units out of position there was my goal as far back as 1904. I tried hard to keep Russia with a fleet so they'd be stretched think of armies in Warsaw.

I again continued to misguess lots of tactical specific moves (France did great to slow me down, Russia outguessed me a bunch too), but in the end I think Russia was too out of position to defend. Falling back early to surrender Norway and Sweden to fight for Warsaw probably would have kept me short.

Amusingly, I think if Turkey had continued harassing Russia, it may have forced him to do this, but it's hard to say.

Lots of things to learn about anticipating people's moves, tactics, and long term plans. I really enjoyed the game with all of you.
