10 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1901: Hi all! In Vilnius, Lithuania. (et j'ai aussi fait un peu de francais a l'ecole... c'etait longtemps mais j'aimerais bien la chance de parler!)
12 Apr 10 UTC Spring, 1902: Ok !
13 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: Hello, I am going to be away from Thursday evening to Sunday evening. I am trying to have someone babysit my account, but if not can we pause for that interval.
13 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: So lets see, who gained even a single center this year... Wow it's Turkey! He gained two! Oh yes, and Austria finally managed to get Serbia. Bravo. If any of you have an ounce of sense you'll pounce on Turkey before he has a chance to reinforce his lines. But no, you'll probably keep working to take me down.

And yes I'm bitter, not just because I was the victim on an ironclad alliance from the first season but because I haven't seen such inept play in my entire Diplomacy-playing life. Hey France! Great idea moving Paris-Gascony! WTF is it going to do there?! Why not move Paris-Picardy so you can convoy it to Wales and be in London by Fall 1903?? And oh yeah, England's not playing, how convenient. And Italy has no clue, how convenient. And Austria's a classic pawn, how convenient.

So in about 3 years it's going to be France and Germany versus Turkey, and the way things are going you'll probably just declare a draw like a bunch of chumps. Fun game, huh?
13 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: Calm down man it's just a game.
13 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: Yeah I know, you're right, I'm just laying it on ya. But it's like, if you're going to play the game, play to win - it's a zero-sum game that's not supposed to end in a draw after a few years.
13 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: I like how Russia is so smart and knowledgeable, knows where everyone should be moving, yet is about to be eliminated, go smoke a bowl
13 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: I never had a chance, I was done from the start. That's what an ironclad alliance is, when two or more countries decide to aggress against another regardless of whether it is or continues to be in their own interest.
14 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: I'm sorry I'm a little color-blind, who made that comment? Was it Italy? Not trying to be snarky, I honestly can't tell. You know, the funny thing about Italy in this game was that it actually simulated Italy's real-life army - utterly ineffectual, indecisive to the point of being schizophrenic.
14 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: No, it was Germany, how does that make you feel?
14 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: I feel fine, thank you.
14 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: haha
14 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: "knows where everyone should be moving" - It's called diplomacy Etterj, why don't you try it sometime?
14 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: or else go play a gunboat game
14 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: Yes, you are quite the diplomat
14 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: oh jeez. How would you have done in my position?
14 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1902: Russia, you may have been able to convince me after the first turn if you hadn't called me a 'Bastard'. You were fairly convincing in your arguments, but I certainly didn't like your Attitude, so I didn't change my opinion of you.

Telling me that you like to stay neutral in 1901 didn't help either, because that let me start talking with both Germany and Turkey. From my past experience, Austria dies quickly without good alliances right from the start.
14 Apr 10 UTC Spring, 1903: Right and that's part of my complaint about the lack of actual diplomacy. I don't think any of you ever sent me a message longer than one sentence. Case in point Austria you never responded to that first message, and then when you teased me about it after the triple-stab said "shove it, you bastard," emphasis clearly on "shove it."

But the point is, here you are, having helped Turkey gain as much as he possibly could, having given Warsaw to Germany when you could have easily convinced him to support you in instead (based on position and relative gains - he's getting all of Scandinavia so of course he'd help you into Warsaw in exchange for continued support), and you got absolutely nothing for yourself! So forget about any idea of Austria somehow needing alliances more than any other country, it's all about position. You have zero leverage on any country around you, you're surrounded and purely on the defensive from here on out. So while you may have succeeded in surviving for a while longer, it's only a matter of time before you're out.

That's why I refer to Diplomacy as a "zero-sum game" - for someone to gain, someone else has to lose. Alliances can only serve you as far as what you gain out of them, they're worth nothing once the mutual threat has been eliminated. Unlike the real world, no group of countries can win, only one individual country can win, or it's a draw. And there's no 1st place, 2nd place, etc, either one country wins or nobody wins, that's what a draw means.
14 Apr 10 UTC Spring, 1903: We are playing a points-per-supply center game. With your theory of winning, you perhaps should go for the winner take all games. When I play my first mission is to survive. My second is to be on a winning team and draw and my third is to win. So we may play differently.
14 Apr 10 UTC Spring, 1903: Bah pour l'instant c'est la France qui gagne (veuillez utiliser le traducteur(translation)) !
14 Apr 10 UTC Spring, 1903: Italy is my hero.
14 Apr 10 UTC Spring, 1903: Who cares about points? This is a beautiful game, played by the Kennedy's in the White House, and Kissenger and other serious strategic thinkers for decades. Who cares about points on a silly website? The game is pure. But maybe you're right I should only play with people who share this view of the game.
14 Apr 10 UTC Spring, 1903: Et en Italie, s'il vous plaît ne pas arrêter de jouer, il ne déséquilibre le jeu plus loin. Faites votre meilleure défense!
14 Apr 10 UTC Spring, 1903: Haha, there should be no "teams" in this game! Silly
16 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1903: yes
16 Apr 10 UTC Autumn, 1903: yes, give it to me
