31 Jan 17 UTC | Spring, 2: Also FUN FACT: One of the terms that ended the First Punic War between Carthage and Rome defined a border between their respective territories, roughly where the border between Saguntum (Called Baetica when it was a province of Rome), and Tarraco (AKA Tarraconensis). If I recall correctly, a sort of DMZ was established in the town of Saguntum. It is lost to history as to who caused the dispute over Saguntum, but it resulted in the beginning of the Second Punic War. Very soon after, the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca launched his invasion of Roman territory from Saguntum, electing to bring his army overland, which would see his army march through Massila (Gallia Narbonensis), across the Alps in Eturia (which was combined with Venice to form the province of Cisalpine Gaul (which meant Gaul on this side of the Alps)), and finally into Italia. |
