Two Questions about the Forum that I couldn't find in the help
1) If you mute a thread, is there any way to unmute it?
2) At what point do your posts and Threads move to the link that you can click on from your profile? They seem to be several weeks old. Is it a page count thing? or a timing thing?

Presidential amnesty
Our beloved universal genius, Master of the Universe and president of the Czech Republic, Tunnelgramps Václav Klaus recently ordered an amnesty for 1/3 of all prisoners to celebrate 20 years since the dissolution of Czechoslovakia he so masterfully orchestrated. Another 500 pardons are in the pipes as well, gotta help the pals out before his time in the office runs out.

The sciences
A recent post by dubmdell on the beauty of science struck me as being rather eloquent. It paused me to stop and think what the relative proportion of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students were across our various countries. In the UK in 2010, for example, there were 12,000 psychology and 10,000 history graduates. Chemistry and physics had 2,400 and 2,200 respectively.

Republicans defend the rich
I am from Europe, so I don't know much about American politics. I always thought that the GOP is for the hard working people. But it seems more and more that they just defend the rich. Sounds stupid to me, is a rather sure way to loose votes.

Trigger Laws
These are laws which do nothing unless certain conditions are first met.

So some (US) states will automatically ban abortion if Roe V Wade is overturned; or automatically ban human cloning if it becomes possible to achieve; however i really like the following rule: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate_Compact

The Greatest (Love) Story Ever Told?
It's not "Romeo and Juliet"...surely we all agree?
It's not "La Boheme," however much I love that opera.
It's not "Les Miserables" (at least not the musical/film version, two lines and BAM! instant, undying love between Marius and Cosette...lol!)
So...what is it--triumphant, comedic or tragic, as we approach the romance of New Years', what IS The Greatest Love Story Ever Told?

The Future of TV
How do ya'll watch TV? Standard Cable? TiVo? Apple TV? A mix of online services? What's holding us back from an Internet-based TV revolution? Are Cable companies to blame, or do we simply not have the bandwidth yet?
Randomizer (722 D)

Some over the air TV with recording on DVR. No TiVo since I don't need someone keeping track of what I watch and how often I replay it. Lots of DVD sets for cable shows since the commentary tracks can be better than the episodes. Some YouTube for shows that aren't easily available.
I don't have cable. I watch television exclusively through the internet.
I don't watch much TV. I watch on Comcast original broadcast if I'm around, or On Demand if I miss it, HBO original broadcast or HBO Go if I miss it.

Like Lando all online if it isn't on standard, basic, channel. Saved us 1200 dollars last year doing it that way.

I think the holdouts are the 40+ age groups. They're used to tv, not streaming. Just what I've noticed over the years/ Christmas break. The suggestion of using Netflix over buying a DVD was not entertained. I realize that's a little different than straight up tv streaming, but I think the base mentality is the same.

My roommate and I decided to cut the cord when we moved into your new apartment a few months ago. So far, I don't really miss it at all. We have an antenna so he can watch most sports and I could watch the Olympics this summer. Other than that, the TV is used for movies or gaming.

When I'm bored, I'll sometimes put Hulu or Netflix on in the background and my gf gets most of the things we watch together from the library.

I do miss HBO and AMC, but not enough to do anything about it.
I don't know how it works in the states, but if you like the shows on AMC and HBO can't you just watch them for free online?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@Lando

Not legally. You can torrent them or watch really shitty streams from shady sites. The reality is, though, that I don't care enough to do either. I have plenty of ways to entertain myself. If HBO doesn't want my business, I'm happy to go somewhere else.
I am sure they would be happy to have your business. But if you are not willing to pay then you likely are not falling into their target. I assume that is what you mean.

In the USA, can torrenting shit "illegally" get you in legal trouble? Word is that Canada may move in that direction, which would be unfortunate.

Also, HBO online often streams their own shows for free. I watched the entirety of NHL 24/7 or whatever its called last year online for free legally via HBO Canada.

I would be happy to pay for HBO. What I'm not willing to do is pay for their content through a cable provider. If I could sign up for HBO online for say, $20 a month, I would do it. That option isn't available.

Torrenting might get you in trouble if you get caught. The point I'm trying to make is that it isn't worth my time. I'm just as happy to wait a year and see it on DVD or on Netflix.

I watch Freeview only why? Most things that I want to watch are on at some point, even if films aren't on there quickly. If I really want to watch a film, I'll go to the cinema and make a night of it. I want sign up to sky as i'm not keen on what they have done to sport in the UK, we used to get sport for free, now we are expected to pay to watch it and it has encouraed the super-rich clubs and players to become disloyal to the fans.

I miss sitting down with the family watching together, now everyone has TV and computers in their rooms there is little family viewing. If someone invents TV that takes out every advert, I'd buy one tomorrow - hate having good programmes interupted.

HBO is a premium channel in the States. They produced the Sopranos, Game of Thrones, etc.

Yes,primary sources with absolutely no ''indigestion''. It aimed high and hit the target. A lesson for all that lowest common denominator TV shit.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
02 Jan 13 UTC
Primary sources? They interviewed people who were present during the Civil War?
fulhamish (4134 D)
02 Jan 13 UTC
No of course not, but there were ample quotes from newspapers, diaries, contemporary speeches etc. You know the kind of thing I am sure.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
02 Jan 13 UTC
But they must have interviewed some real people. Documentary TV needs footage of people talking. Or, generally, documentary makers think they do.
fulhamish (4134 D)

There was analysis yes you are right. And I thought it was of a pretty high standard.

But the thing that really appealed to me were the extensive and well selected primary sources as I explain above. Maybe you would might appreciate them too, now you understand what they are.

Autumn 19XX Retreats
If a player earns their 18th center, the game ends. The game does not progress into the retreats phase; it simply ends. If someone can retreat into a center of the winning player, the game will still end. I understand that once you hit 18 centers the game is over, but my belief is that retreats are a part of the season in which they follow. If they are, shouldn't they go through, even if the player has gotten 18 centers?
